New specialist Africa post – April/May 2010

Based near Richmond, Expert Africa is a market-leading, award-winning specialist tour operator, with a growing client base and an excellent track record for African expertise and customer service.

Our small Africa team consists of eleven well-organised individuals: team-players who are naturally honest with a high degree of integrity. We're a member of the market-leading Sunvil group, and thus work as a group within a larger, lively office.

We are currently recruiting. As usual we have flexibility in the precise role for the right candidate.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Africa Consultant

If you are an Africa-specialist with at least 2-3 years experience working successfully for a specialist African travel company, then we may have the perfect job for you.

Ideally, you will have extensive, first-hand experience of Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe – with detailed, up-to-date knowledge of these countries, their attractions for travellers, and especially their national parks and safari camps/hotels.

First-hand knowledge of the other countries that we feature – Seychelles, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Namibia and the Cape – would also be an advantage; as would competency on the Travelink reservations system and Galileo GDS system.

To be successful, you will need to be enthusiastic and intelligent, conscientious and co-operative; you will always take your duties seriously and make decisions carefully. Excellent communication skills are important, as are solid basic computer skills. High levels of literacy and of numeracy are vital: you will need to be able to write competently and use basic maths with confidence.

Although solid experience of the specialist African travel business would be ideal, we have the flexibility to adapt the role. You should still apply to us if you are a bright, graduate-level candidate who is just starting to get into the industry.

Whatever level you are at, you'll need to demonstrate to us a genuine and enduring passion for Africa, preferably one that comes with an interest in its wildlife, ecology and cultures.

---------------------------------------------------------------

This position offer huge scope for progression within Expert Africa, limited only by your own abilities, experience and motivation.

It will certainly include giving our well-informed travellers intelligent and personal advice on their trips – and working to make these trips a reality, from quotes and discussions, to making the bookings and sending out final tickets and documents.

We want you to be an expert on Africa, who can advise travellers accurately and with empathy. We try hard to promote responsible tourism and will need you to do so. You will never be asked to use any form of 'hard-sell' technique!

Whilst this position's focus is on reservations, you'll also have scope to become involved in aspects of the company's marketing – depending on your interests and abilities. This can vary from producing the brochure to writing our website, and from running consumer shows to organising events for clients or suppliers.

You'll join a friendly and co-operative team, in a flexible working environment. You'll be recognised as an individual – and, ultimately, you'll work with a high degree of autonomy; planning your own work, taking control of your own projects and specialities, and meeting your own deadlines.

There's a highly competitive remuneration package for the post which is commensurate with your experience. This includes 20 days holiday per year and, after you've been with us for two years, group private health insurance and a matched-contribution pension scheme.

After your first six months, you can generally look forward to having four weeks of research travel in Africa every year. This is usually made up of two 2-week trips, which aim to develop your knowledge and help to make you a real expert on Africa. Expert Africa funds this travel completely; it helps our team members to be amongst the most knowledgeable in the industry.
