The Emakoko: picture gallery

The Emakoko is a luxury safari lodge on the south side of Nairobi National Park.
Most guests arrive from JKIA or Wilson Airport via the East Gate of Nairobi National Park…
…and there's no shortage of wildlife to be seen en route, including some very impressive buffaloes.
Access is via the national park itself and you reach the lodge over their private footbridge.
Vehicles stay on the national park side of the Mbagathi River…
…and the river also tends to deter dangerous large beasts from entering the lodge grounds.
The Emakoko's public areas and five of its rooms are at the bottom of the cliff.
Straight off the footbridge you arrive in the main lounge and dining terrace…
…where there are plenty of places to relax…
…and recover from your journey.
For a maximum of around 20 guests, there are always places to be private - or sociable.
Dining is at individual tables.
Fires are lit on chilly evenings…
…but design touches allow the park's atmosphere to penetrate the lodge.
The swimming pool has a fine setting.
You get a bird's eye view of the lodge's grounds, and the rooms below…
…when you scale the cliff.
The top rooms offer fine views…
…but aren't suitable for small children, or anyone who doesn't want a few good work-outs!
The rooms are spacious and very comfortably furnished…
…and every room has a fireplace…
... and a delightful veranda...
…either looking onto the grounds…
…or (from the upper rooms) looking north, overlooking the gorge and the national park beyond.
The bathrooms are a very good size…
…stylishly designed…
…and thoughtfully laid out, with bath tubs…
…as well as showers.
Although the rooms don't lock, each has a mini-safe for valuables.
