Rothschild Giraffe Safari

A example of a luxury Kenyan safari, starting at the iconic Giraffe Manor before fabulous stays on the spectacular Solio Reserve and Sala’s Camp in a remote corner of the Maasai Mara.

Rothschild Giraffe Safari: Summary

Rothschild Giraffe Safari in a nutshell

This luxury eight-night tailor-made safari suggestion combines three beautiful lodges and encompasses three vastly different areas, making for a fine first-time visit to Kenya.

We begin with a night at the magical Giraffe Manor, including close encounters with the resident Rothschild giraffes, which invariably stick their necks through the windows of the Sun Room while you're having breakfast. By including Giraffe Manor's sister properties, this itinerary offers a high chance of getting a room at the manor, which is frequently sold-out a year or more ahead.

Next are three nights at the exquisite Solio Lodge, located in its own private sanctuary in Laikipia, not far from the foothills of the Aberdare Mountains. Solio Reserve has been extremely successful in breeding black rhinos and is home to a good variety of other wildlife. A wonderfully varied roster of activities here includes walking safaris, horse-riding and cycling on the reserve. The Aberdare National Park with its dense forest, stunning waterfalls and unique wildlife is close by too.

Solio’s sister lodge, Sala’s, lies in the deep south of Maasai Mara National Reserve, close to the Tanzania border. Due to its unique location, Sala’s Camp has two main advantages: noticeably fewer vehicles in the surrounding area along with access to both sides of the park – the main reserve and the Mara Triangle.

Giraffe Manor

Day 1

A temple to the benign cult of the giraffe, Giraffe Manor is one of Kenya's most popular luxury lodges. Originally built in 1932, it has been a country house hotel since 1984. Most of the hotel's patch of land comprises the Giraffe Centre, and a group of these gentle creatures roams the grounds. They visit the house and gardens daily to be fed through the windows. If you're aiming to stay here, book as early as you possibly can, as rooms are often taken a year or more ahead.

Solio Lodge

Days 2-5

Solio Lodge, situated in the extensive, privately owned wildlife sanctuary of Solio Game Reserve, lies on the southern fringes of Laikipia, close to the foothills of the Aberdare range. Occupying the rolling plains between the Aberdare and Mount Kenya national parks, Solio is a beacon in Kenya's conservation landscape, and the country's pioneer in breeding black rhinos.

Sala's Camp

Days 5-9

Sala’s Camp is a small, luxury tented camp that first opened in 2004 at the confluence of the Sand River and the Kebololoet (aka Keekorok) stream. It is located in the far south of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, near the Tanzanian border, and is thus often one of the first camps in the Mara ecosystem to greet the arriving herds of the great wildebeest migration. This area also tends to be a little quieter than other parts of the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Safari in Nairobi National Park

Half day - AM or PM, or full day

It is truly remarkable that the plains and woodland of Nairobi National Park, an area of around 70km² (some 17,000 acres) should exist in a near-natural state so close to the city that in any other conurbation they would just be suburbs.
