Dome tent.

Camp Kalahari, Kalahari's Salt Pans, Botswana

Each tent at Camp Kalahari is about 3m x 3m, and has been set up under the shade of a tree. Its porch overlooks the savannah and saltpan in the distance. Three large canvas windows can be partially or fully rolled up to let the air flow through. The 'front door' also has an outside canvas cover that can be rolled up or zipped closed depending on the weather. Each window and door has sewn-in mosquito netting to make the tent bug proof.

A fly-sheet offers additional protection, and doubles as a porch. Under the shade of this, two folding canvas camp chairs offer a spot to relax with a good book. Outside each tent is a canvas wash-basin and a canvas 'cupboard' for your lotions and potions. A water jug beside your basin is filled each morning, at the same time as your wake up call, and is refreshed before your return from an activity.

Inside the tent are two separate camp beds, each with a comfortable bedroll including a duvet, blankets and two pillows. There is a luggage rack where you can store your bag and a bedside table. You'll also find insect repellent, bug spray, tissues, soap and a full fruit bowl in your tent – along with bottled water to drink and for brushing your teeth.
A torch is also provided for each tent – although we strongly recommend that you also bring a personal torch with you (the tiny halogen head-torches are brilliant).

When we visited Camp Kalahari in 2007 there was only one shower enclosure, and one long drop toilet, shared between all six tents. We're advised that this will change shortly – and the plan is for each tent to have its own private bucket shower and toilet.

The bucket shower is surrounded by a 3m x 3m canvas enclosure. There is a wooden platform to stand on to keep your feet clean while you shower and a table to keep your clothes and soaps on. The canvas bucket is filled with water heated over the fire each time a shower is requested.

The long-drop toilet is in a smaller, separate enclosure. The hole is covered by a wooden 'bush” toilet complete with toilet seat on a wooden 'throne'. A bucket of ash is provided to 'flush' with – and this keeps it relatively sweet-smelling!
