Just a five-minute walk from the centre of town, the new Central Guest House in Swakopmund is a good base for those travelling around Namibia, and perfect for self-drivers.
Set centrally on the corner of Lüderitz & Leutwein streets, the Central Guesthouse is a slightly unprepossessing grey building with a secure car park to the right hand side, accessed by an electric gate. There is not a garden as such, although there is a small courtyard with tables and chairs at the back of the property.
The guest house has six bedrooms. All are large and have high ceilings, dark mahogany furniture, comfortable (extra length) beds and crisp white linen. When I stayed in November 2008, I was given a double bedroom – but perplexingly, only one side of the bed was made up, leaving the other side a bare mattress! Each room has an en-suite bathroom with a good powerful shower, toilet and basin, tea & coffee making facilities, a safe for personal belongings, a flat screen satellite TV, air-conditioning, and wireless internet access.
Main facilities at the Central Guest House include a comfortable lounge with an open fire place, and a small dining room, where a buffet-style breakfast is served in the mornings. In the main upstairs hallway there is an honesty bar with a small selection of drinks and sweet and savoury snacks and fruit. There is a wide range of literature on various activities available in Swakopmund.
Whilst staying here, the owners will help to arrange any of the activities available in Swakopmund. In addition, Swakopmund boasts a great choice of restaurants, shops and museums - many of which are within easy walking distance of the Central Guest House.
In conclusion… Although the Central Guest House seems like a fairly unattractive, grey building on the outside, it's comfortable inside, and a good base for a few nights' stay in Swakopmund.
