Although there are four rooms classed as 'Superior' at Chateau St Cloud, only two are in these hillside timber cabins. Perched high up in the rocks above the plantation house, the stepped access is not for anyone with mobility or vertigo issues. The path to these rooms is a series of fairly steep, uneven concrete steps and we particularly do not recommend these rooms for families with young children.

Once you've made the mini-trek though, these timber cabins are really quite quaint and pleasant and do offer a canopy view of the surroundings which is rarely available on La Digue. With high ceilings, all-wood paneling and a chalet-style atmosphere inside, they are perfect for people who like get away form it all to read, relax and have some private space. The interiors are spacious, if a little Spartan, and the double beds and reasonably sized en-suite bathroom, with shower and bath, are all simple but well-kept.

The Superior rooms at Chateau St Cloud all have air conditioning and a ceiling fan, IDD telephone, a mini bar, safe and facilities for making morning tea and coffee. There's a wide terrace with wrought iron table/chairs and two deck chairs for daytime relaxation and viewing the sunset fruit bat activity. Tucked amid the treetops and granite boulders, overlooking the hotel pool, tortoise pen and main house, it is a cool, shady place to sit back and relax in a good deal of privacy.

At the time we visited, however, it was possible to hear the lilting local reggae music drifting over the hillside from the neighbouring homes. It was not irritating or disturbing, in fact we rather enjoyed it, but is to be expected at times given the proximity of resident housing.
