Daan Viljoen is a small game park situated about 20km west of Windhoek. The park encompasses some of the scenic hills of the Khomas Hochland highlands.
Although there is no 'big game' found here, there are good populations of Hartmann's mountain zebra, blue wildebeest, warthog, giraffe along with a wide variety of antelope, including the largest and rarely spotted eland. This park is particularly well known for its birdlife which is plentiful. Some of Namibia's endemic bird species are found here including Ruppel's parrot, Monteiro's Hornbill, Damara rockrunner and white-tailed Shrike. There is a small game drive loop which allows visitors to explore the area, stopping at a number of waterholes on the way. This route can be quite rocky in places so we only recommend visitors try it in a vehicle with good ground clearance.
Daan Viljoen Resort is a government run and overlooks the pretty Augeigas Dam. There are 22 chalets here, most with two single beds, hotplates, fridges, bedding, washbasins and towels. A few of the chalets are suitable for families with four beds in each. There are separate ablution blocks nearby with flush toilets and showers supplied with hot and cold water. The resort's main area has a restaurant, small kiosk, bar and swimming pool.
Daan Viljoen is a great little park, especially for keen birders. However, the accommodation is well overdue a refurbishment – plans for this are in the pipeline but we don't have a date yet. If you plan to visit here we recommend you stay during the week as locals from Windhoek often visit during the weekends making the area a lot busier and noisier.
During your stay, keep a watchful eye on any food as the baboons here have learnt how to steal quite successfully.
