Tented ChaletDuba Plains, Okavango Delta Safari Reserves, Botswana Duba's rooms are accessed by a sandy path leading to steps up to the main balcony, which overlooks the main floodplain in front of camp. Comfortable wooden directors chairs and a small table are situated under the stoop of the tent, on the balcony. The tents have wooden doors (which can be slightly sticky) with “flick-hook” closures which render them very secure. The beds inside the tents face forwards, affording a great view of the plains, and are supremely comfortable with thick mattresses and soft pillows. Wide mosquito-netting windows let in a breeze, which makes the rooms wonderfully cool – in addition, the fan in the centre of the room is very powerful and useful at night to keep off the mosquitoes. There is a dark wood desk to one side of the tent, containing plenty of information about the area, and a good selection of birding and wildlife magazines (many containing articles about Duba, undoubtedly by design). On the other side, there is a small table, and a wicker chair with an embroidered footstool. The “headboard” for the beds is a wide shelf with a dark wood room divider behind it (decorated stylishly with mudcloth designs) upon which is bottled water and two slightly art-deco style lamps which provide a good light for reading before bedtime. Behind the beds and next to the washstand you will find two open sided wardrobes (one with shelves, one with hanging space) which provide ample room for clothes. There is a safe in the rooms, but disconcertingly, I discovered one could pick it up and walk away with it! Mosquito repellent, bug spray and mosquito coils (which are lit nightly by the staff) are available in the rooms. Behind the beds, forming the other side of the headboard, is a double washstand with lovely big basins, a huge mirror and large cupboards underneath. The basins are beautifully designed from thick African pottery (a tip – don't fill these with water and then leave them for any length of time – they leak! We discovered this when soaking a few clothes to wash) and in between these a full selection of toiletries with the Wilderness logo – shampoo, body wash, soap, body lotion etc can be found, as well as washing powder for smalls. White waffle weave dressing gowns are provided as well as big fluffy towels. Through a set of curtains behind the washbasins, can be found the en-suite flush loo on the left and a cubicled shower on the right. A door leads to the walkway at the back of camp, and if you follow this you will finally find yourself in the middle of the outside shower, designed around a tree. We found it a little too windy to try this but a quick test of the taps reveals a good powerful blast of water. Click here to return to the main page on Duba Plains ^ Top of page |
