On the mainland, a short boat transfer from Vilanculos town, Dugong Lodge stands on a long beach.
It has ten large tented suites with polished wooden floors, and an en-suite bathroom with a huge bath and an outdoor shower. The central lounge dining area is open on one side to a sundeck, inset with a small freshwater pool.
Activities possible here, payable locally, include fishing and scuba diving, although the best reefs are distant – around the Bazaruto Archipelago.
Dugong is a curious spot that has clear been designed for sale on a 'timeshare' basis, for the South African market. Thus some of the suites are quite vast – even having cooking facilities.
It's not a bad lodge if all you want is a beach on which to relax, although if you want to dive or snorkel, then you'd probably do better to look to one of the other, similarly small lodges on the islands themselves – the new Azura Mozambique; the Portuguese-influenced Bazaruto Lodge; the long-established Benguerra Lodge; or the efficient Marlin Lodge.
