Tented room

DumaTau, Kwando-Linyanti area, Botswana

The tented rooms at Duma Tau are beautifully designed, and reached by a raised wooden walkway which meanders slowly through the woodland surrounding the camp. Each room is marked with a wooden number, and the walkways branch off individually, raising slightly towards the room. The rooms are facing towards the front of camp and the approach from the back means that they afford a lot of privacy.

Walking round the side of the tent, there is a large deck with a couple of comfortable chairs and a table, overlooking the water in front of camp. My tent also had a grassy area in front which during the day played host to a number of monkeys and ground birds, and during the night the odd hippo and elephant.

The tents are substantial, and entered through a wooden double door, with a secure latch. Straight in front on entering is the large double (or twin) bed, with bedside tables and large lamps. A very comfortable armchair with a footstool is in the corner of the room, next to a luggage rack, big enough for two fair sized suitcases. There is a standing fan in the corner of the room.

The bed is large and very comfortable, with very soft cotton sheets and large squishy pillows, and at the foot of the bed is an ottoman with information about the camp and the surrounding area. At night the room attendants pull the canvas tent flaps down for privacy and to keep out any slightly too cool breezes.

The main tent comprises the bathroom and the bedroom, and these are separated by a large divider which, on the bedroom side, is an open cupboard. Inside this is plenty of hanging space and shelves, an electronic safe, coffee and tea making facilities, bottled and filtered water, towels, bug spray and two cream-coloured cotton dressing gowns (sadly rather scratchy to wear!).

On the other side of the room divider is the bathroom. At the entrance to this is a comfortable chair and small table. The bathroom itself is decorated with soothing, muted shades and lots of wood. There is a simple wooden washstand with an inset stoneware bowl, plenty of complementary toiletries (shampoo, soap, body lotion, shower cap, sewing kit, vanity kit and washing powder for undergarments) and fluffy white towels. Above the washstand is a carved and rather ornate mirror, and the water is always hot!

In the corner of the bathroom is a large shower cubicle with a very powerful shower, beside a flush toilet. There is also a towel rail with more fluffy towels.

Duma Tau's rooms also have an outside shower, which is probably better to use in the warmer months (we last visited in May – when it was a little chilly for this!). This is reached through the main double doors of the room and round the side. It is enclosed by curving canvas walls on three sides and offers great views of the area to the front of the camp.
