Rondavels

E Unoto Retreat, Lake Manyara National Park, Tanzania

The 25 rooms at E Unoto are dotted up the hillside, with some over looking Lake Miwaleni and others looking across the surrounding valleys. Each is a detached rondavel with burnt orange stone walls and high thatch ceilings.

The rooms are quite close together, and if you sit on your small balcony to enjoy the view, you might well be able to see your neighbour. But when we were last there we didn't feel that this hugely detracted from the feel of the room itself – which is cool, comfortable and once inside very private.

The rooms feel very natural, with Africa carved furniture and muted colours. The chair to the writing desk had been cleverly carved as a Maasai warrior, and cattle are carved into the lampshades.

Each rondavel at E Unoto has two large double beds, which are built using chunky pieces of wood and have incredibly soft duvets. There is a phone between the beds for calling reception, as well as drinking water and a torch. (This doesn't have access to an outside line.)

You will also find two comfortable wood and leather armchairs, set around a coffee table that doubles up as a draughts board – a favourite Tanzanian pass time.

There are fans in the rooms to help you keep cool in the evenings. There is also a large lockable trunk for you to store any valuables.

Behind a partition wall – you will find twin porcelain his-and-hers sinks and brass taps set into a polished stone surface. There is a long mirror above the sink, and a power point for electric shavers.

The shower is then a small separate room behind the sinks – there is hot-and-cold water available. Toiletries are also provided. Then through another separate door you will also find the toilet.
