Hohenstein Lodge is located at the foot of the highest mountain (its namesake – Hohenstein Mountain) on the south-western edge of the Erongo Mountain range.
None of the Expert Africa team have visited this lodge yet, but here is what we understand about it.
Each of the ten en-suite bungalows has been designed to allow guests the best possible views of the surrounding mountains. On one side there is the 1,469m metre tall Mount Kainachab, whilst on the other stands the 2,319m Hohenstein Mountain. You can even see the stunning Spitzkoppe Massif in the distance. Between the lodge and mountains is a wide valley dotted with ancient camelthorn trees.
Hohenstein Lodge's main building has a spacious patio where meals can be taken. Views from the patio include a nearby waterhole which is often visited by a variety of wildlife.
The lodge offers a range of activities including sundowner drives to visit ancient Bushman and Damara paintings and guided hikes to the 'boulder forest' or to some small miner claims where gemstones are sourced. The Erongo Mountains are also well known as a superb bird watching area and numerous species are attracted to the water points in front of the lodge's main area. Hohenstein Lodge also makes a great base from where to take day trips to explore the Spitzkoppe and Brandberg Mountains.
