Jao Camp, Okavango Delta Safari Reserves, Botswana

The rooms at Jao are individually and lavishly hand crafted, and probably among the most luxurious rooms in the Okavango Delta, if not the whole of Botswana. Each room is tented, with a thatched roof, and boasts an outside deck with a sala – a thatched sleeping area which is perfect for afternoon siestas or just watching the game go by. Inside, there is a comfortable seating area with an enormous leather sofa, and in the centre of the room is the bed, created from local woods and with a walk in mosquito net. The beds are huge and look very comfortable, each with a view over the floodplains to the front of camp. The rooms have wooden doors with mosquito gauze which “concertina” open, to maximise the view. Each room has a safe, plenty of storage space and a selection of wildlife and birding magazines.

If you keep walking through the room you will find yourself passing a partition (which also doubles as a wardrobe open to the bathroom) which divides the main bathroom area from the rest of the room. Here you will find a freestanding washstand, with two basins, and a full range of luxurious toiletries. Behind the basins, set against the wall, is an old fashioned claw foot bath which we discovered could fit two people (needless to say, the experiment was conducted fully clothed!). Keep walking and you will pass the separate loo, leading to the outside shower area – this is on a separate platform, and has hot and cold water and a huge shower rose. The shower area is surrounded by a clay wall, moulded to give privacy whilst also affording a great view onto the Jao plains.
