Tented room

Kirurumu Tented Lodge, Ngorongoro Crater & Conservation Area, Tanzania

The tented rooms at Kirurumu Tented Lodge are spacious, clean and comfortable. Kirurumu's tents are raised up on wooden decks, around one metre off the ground. A few steps lead up onto a wide wooden veranda where there are a few comfortable wood and leather lounging chairs.

From the veranda, wide canvas flaps that lead into the bedroom. Kirurumu's bedrooms are big, and this helps them to feel cool and clean. Makuti mats (made from palm fronds) are dotted across the russet red stone floors which are polished to a high shine.

In the rooms are large wooden beds which have been made by local craftsmen. Then the use of traditional Maasai blankets adds some style and character.

Kirurumu's rooms are also furnished with a writing desk and wooden side tables. Drinking water is provided, as is 24-hour electricity for charging batteries. The sockets are UK-style (3 square pins). These rooms don't have fans or air-con, but in the evenings it gets quite cool due to the altitude of the lodge, so these are not really required. The temperature is naturally quite comfortable.

What we liked most about the bedrooms at Kirurumu Tented Lodge was the sense of space. A lot of tented properties can feel a little small and stuffy sometimes, but these rooms are cool and breezy. They are simply and quite sparsely furnished – but this enhances the feeling of space even more.

The en-suite bathrooms at Kirurumu Tented Lodge sit behind a canvas door at the back of the tent. Low stone walls divide the bathroom area into three separate section, with a sink, a flushing toilet and a hot-and-cold shower. All are perfectly clean and functional.

However, the construction of the bathroom is a curious mix of canvas and stone, and their colour scheme is extremely gaudy: bright yellow stone
are juxtaposed with the dark green of the canvas, and the bright blue tiled floors.

This colour scheme is quite extraordinary, and although we were not terribly impressed, we can imagine that some travellers would find it lots of fun simply because it's so quirky. We just felt that it was dated and needed a make-over!
