If you have at least two nights, then head for Lechwe Lodge where you'll find six delightful rondavels dotted around well-kept lawns beside a farmhouse. All are roomy with solid wooden furniture, cool polished floors, en-suite showers and toilets. Lechwe's food is fresh and plentiful - truly wholesome farm fare.
There's a resident guide for drives and walks around the farm, though walking on your own is allowed as there are no big cats, elephant or buffalo. The farm covers a sizeable area of woodlands and floodplains beside the Kafue River. Here you will find giraffe, eland, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, Kafue lechwe, oribi and sitatunga, as well as many of the more common antelope of the region. Numerous crocodiles, otters and hippos inhabit the river whilst plenty of serval stalk near its banks.
Birdwatchers won't be disappointed; there are over 420 species here, including numerous water-birds and waders. Boat trips along the river and fishing excursions are also possible most of the year, as is horse-riding (for experienced riders only), whilst excellent farm tours showcase their eco-friendly production systems for pork and fish.
Lechwe is a gentle and civilised place, perfect for just relaxing on your first, or last, few nights in Zambia; it's excellent value.
