Safari Tent

Little Vumbura, Okavango Delta Safari Reserves, Botswana

The chalets at Little Vumbura are reached along a wooden walkway which runs close to the ground (40cm). Off this walkway, each chalet has its own private 'spur' walkway, which rises up to a height of about 2-3m at the door of each chalet.

As Little Vumbura is built in a forested island, the circus-top-style canvas roofs of most of its tented chalets are shaded by the large, evergreen trees. Walking inside, you are aware that the canvas roof comes to two points above the open-plan chalet: one above the bed, and the other above the lounge area.

The chalet is floored throughout with pale wooden timber, and many walls have enormous mesh windows, giving a feeling of space and light. On the left, as you enter through the heavy wooden door, you'll find the mahogany bedstead – either twin or double beds with side tables – equipped with soft light lamps and also halogen reading lights. Large box-frame mosquito nets cover both beds. At the front of the room is a desk with camp information and wildlife magazines, and a chair.

To the right you'll find a large wicker wardrobe with dressing gowns supplied (quite scratchy, we found – but they were very new!) and a comfortable squishy armchair with foot-stool and views over the plains through the canvas windows. To the right of the armchair is a double wicker washstand with a large mirror above – and the en suite shower and toilet.

The two halves of this room can be separated by closing a large curtain, which divides the room with a fabric wall.

Inside the room's main lounge/living area is a wicker washstand. This contains two wash-basins – which are lovely blue ceramic bowls, surrounded by a variety of complementary toiletries (with the notable exception of conditioner). Above this is a large mirror.

Either side of this washstand, there are two stable-type doors (open at the top, closed at the bottom). One of these leads to the shower, which has a large floor-to-ceiling mesh window, overlooking the plains; the other door is for the flush toilet.

The result of this is that the bathrooms in the chalets at Little Vumbura are not particularly private. You wouldn't normally draw the curtain in the room, and the shower is directly visible to anyone sitting on the deck. Apart from this – we really liked the rooms: the beds were very comfortable, and the high roof meant that they feel very light and airy.

Outside the chalet is a shaded deck area, with a very comfortable light wicker armchair and an in-built cushioned sofa, all overlooking the plains with far reaching views.
