Ntemwa Bushcamp

 - Kafue National Park, Zambia

Although Ntemwa Bushcamp is new for 2007, it's actually been positioned on the site of an old camp, about 105km north of the main Kafue Hook Bridge – in the north of Kafue National Park. The site has a secluded location on open savanna, just south of the Busanga Plains.

The old Ntemwa Camp had four fairly ugly rooms with tin roofs and two thatched cottages, which all slid into various stages of dereliction. (A company called Chilongozi then tried to build and run it in the late 1990s, before going spectacularly bankrupt).

However, the new tented camp here is a much simpler affair, with four small, simple walk-in tents. These have twin stretcher beds with bedrolls and cotton duvets, luggage racks, en-suite toilets and hot showers (bucket). It's been designed to keep the important comforts of a camp, whilst also retaining a real feel of true adventure in the wilderness.

It's the sister-camp of Musanza Bushcamp, and the venue for some great-value trips to northern Kafue, based around the Puku safari.

Special interests
Birdwatching: Kafue's an excellent park for bird-watching and Ntemwa stands just south of the transition from miombo woodlands to 'termitaria zone' and thence open plains – so has a very good range of bird species.

Wildlife: Ntemwa's game is quite varied, though you'll have to work a little harder for it here than on the vast, open plains to the north. To the east of camp is a good area for the shy roan antelope – and shouth is prime leopard-viewing country, around the lush riverine vegetation.
