Onguma Tented Camp

 - Etosha National Park, Namibia
Read 29 traveller reviews of Onguma Tented Camp

Onguma Tented Camp is situated directly next to the eastern side of Etosha National Park. From the entrance gate onto the private Onguma reserve, the tented camp is just 10km onto the property. Here you can explore great wildlife on the private Onguma reserve as well as inside the Etosha National Park.

The focal point of the camp is the floodlit waterhole directly in front of the main area and the camp is built around this main attraction so that it can be seen from all areas of the camp including from the rooms. Onguma Tented Camp has a very fresh, modern and tasteful design style in earth tones with splashes of color.

From the under guests' shaded parking area it is a short walk to the shaded wooden walkway leading to the camp's main areas and reception where three beautiful hand-crafted giraffes are standing guard. The main areas are housed under three large circus like top tents, with a second layer of beige material forming the inside roof. The design also incorporates large wooden beams to support the part canvas, part brick structure. Also connected by walkway, the pool area is very attractive with an infinity pool and a number of beanbags and a few sun loungers for guests to use. The whole front section of the main area is completely open, so one can have a direct view of the waterhole from anywhere in the camp.

To the left of the main entrance is a large open area which incorporates two almost identical guest lounges, each furnished with a large, plush charcoal twin sofa, a high backed white arm chair, a few large bean bags, a dark wooden coffee table, a wooden saddle stool, and some bright scatter cushions. The tea/coffee station is directly between the two living areas, separating them. There is a large furnace fire place built into the limestone wall to warm guests on chilly winter evenings.

Onguma Tented Camp has seven tented rooms. All the tents are exactly the same, the only difference being that some of the bathrooms are situated differently. Tent number five is the one closest to the main area and has the best view of the waterhole.

There are gravel pathways leading to the rooms that then lead onto a raised wooden platform with a large partly shaded front verandah facing out onto the waterhole.
There are two comfortable arm chairs and a small table on the veranda to sit and enjoy the wildlife drinking at the waterhole. The tent has a circus tent top with an inner layer of beige material supported by a large wooden beam in the centre of the room.
The whole front section has double sliding glass doors in a wooden frame, with double roll down canvas flaps which can be rolled down and zipped closed. Either side of the double doors is a large elongated window with mesh with zip up flaps which can be rolled down.

On entering the tent to the left is a comfortable, high backed arm chair, with a throw draped over the arm and next to it is a tall lamp. There is an animal skin rug in front of the two twin beds which are pushed together, up against a concrete headboard decorated with tea lights. There is a metal round flat top bedside table with a bird cage like base either side of the beds, with adjustable tall bedside reading lamps with adjustable, flexible spines.

There are a number of large vertical windows on the sides of the canvas walls with mesh and roll down flaps. Behind the headboard and on either side of the room are wardrobes, with a luggage rack each, some shelves, an area to hang-up clothes with a few hangers provided, a straw shopping bag with pool towels and a linen robe.
There two high limestone brick walls forming part of a wall which separates off part of the bathroom and the toilet area. Against these walls are two full length mirrors next to each wardrobe area and the fire extinguisher is right next to it.

Behind the concrete headboard is a long thick wooden shelf with a tea /coffee station on it, a stainless steel kettle, a jug of ice-cubes, double plug sockets, a beautiful hand crafted box holding sachets of teas/coffees, sugars etc. There is also another lamp on this shelf and a white retro pod chair.

The en-suite bathroom is spacious and is directly past the two high walls, with his/hers twin hand basin, with large horizontal mirrors hanging overhead. There is a big spacious stone walk-in shower with a powerful shower head and on the opposite side of the bathroom is a nice large free standing silver bath next to two windows so that you have great views of the outdoors from your bath. A tree stump serves as a small table with a large silver pot with bath salts and a wooden spoon to scoop with. There are lots of floor towels rolled up near the shower, the wash basins and also around the bath.

There is another silver chair next to the bath with two large bath towels rolled up on it.
Towel hooks and shower gel and shampoo are provided in large glass dispensers. The toilet is directly behind one of the stone walls and is separate from the rest of the bathroom area, with a proper wooden door. Each tent also has an outdoor shower which can be reached through a single zip up door to the side of the room.

The camp offers an indoor and out outdoor dining experience, but using the same space.Outdoor dining is during the warmer summer months were the guests dine under a roof but the side is completely open, offering clear views over the floodlit waterhole.During the rainy season or cold winters the open sides are lowered and closed off to keep out the cold.

Activities offered at Onguma tented Camp include morning game drives into the Etosha National Park, but the furthest that the vehicles/guide will drive is Halali.
Onguma offers a sunset drive which ends with a sundowner while watching the sunset, as well asnight drives on the Onguma reserve after dinner.

Please note that Onguma Tented Camp only have one vehicle and therefore cannot offer afternoon drives into the Etosha National Park. There are also no self-drives on their private Onguma reserve.

Because Onguma have a few lodges on their property, they can only utilize 10% of the reserve for game drives in order to avoid their game drive vehicles running into each other.
