Expert Africa Favourite

Palmwag Lodge, Damaraland, Namibia

Built slighter further from the main lapa than the rooms, and therefore offering a more secluded stay, each of Palmwag's five large canvas tents is elevated above the rocks on stilts, overlooking the reed beds of the Uniab River.

Inside the beds have big wooden headboards and mosquito nets, with khaki and cream linen, and beside each is a bed-side lamp with woven lampshade. A matching lamp stands in the corner. The tents are furnished with more style and quality than the rooms – they have a dark wood cabinet (with combination mini-safe inside), a dressing-table with a mirror, plus a hanging rack and shelves for clothes and extra blankets.

The tent vents can be opened to allow a breeze to come through when days are hot and the extra blankets as great for the cooler winter months.

There is a time-restricted three-pin South African-style power point in the room, and they also provide Mosquito repellent and a loud hooter to use in case of any danger.

Each tent has raised wooden verandah at the front, with a table and two chairs, where you can sit and watch birds and animals come for a drink at the spring below.

At the back of each tent there is a natural, airy bathroom accessed through a wooden door. The walls are constructed out of woven reed and are open between this and the canvas roof. There is a hot shower, hand basin and flushing toilet, hot and cold water are on tap and soap is provided.
