Peace Guesthouse

 - Lake Kivu, Rwanda
Read 1 traveller review of Peace Guesthouse

Peace Guesthouse is situated in the far south-west coner of Rwanda, on the shores of Lake Kivu near the port of Cyangugu. None of the Expert Africa team have visited this hotel yet, however here is what we know about it so far.

The guesthouse is in a quiet location just outside Cyangugu, and offers a comfortable base from where you can explore the local areas of interest. Apparently the staff are very friendly and offer a warm welcome.

It was built by the Anglican Diocese of Cyangugu and while reputedly providing the most peaceful accommodation in the town, it is designed to generate income to run the Anglican church.

Peace Guesthouse has 22 fairly simple but clean rooms, some have en-suite facilities whilst others have to share bathrooms. There are 16 terraced wallside rooms and lakeside rooms and five individual rondavels which have two twin rooms, en suite bathroom and a sitting room. These would be ideal for families. Finally there is one VIP villa.

Good value meals are available throughout the day in their restaurant, which has indoor seating and a terrace with beautiful views over the lake. Please note that no alcohol is allowed on the premises.

Most people base themselves here in order to combine a stay on the lake with good access to Nyungwe Forest National Park which is only 45 minutes away. This wonderful and little visited park is a great place for doing some lovely forest walks where you should be able to see a number of different primates, including Ruwenzori colobus monkey, l'Hoest's monkey, silver monkey and, if you are lucky, chimpanzee. The birding here is also pretty good, as well as back at Peace Guesthouse where you can spot sunbirds, mousebirds, ibis, flycatchers, weevers and many others.

The guesthouse can also organise a boat to take you onto the lake from where you can watch local fishermen and spot further varieties of birds.
