BungalowPole Pole, Mafia Island, Tanzania Pole Pole has seven detached thatched bungalows, all of which sit a little way up a hill and look out over the sea. These bungalows look quite rustic from the outside, as though they are made entirely from palm leaves. However, when you walk up the few stairs and enter the rooms – they are far from rustic. Each room is a spacious double or twin room, with a good size en-suite bathroom and a private balcony. The rooms have dark wooden floors, white-washed walls and natural wooden support beams showing through, like an old farmhouse. Bright, billowing fabrics for the soft furnishings, and hand woven makuti mats on the floor, help these rooms maintain an African character. Each room has plenty of hanging space for clothes, a writing desk, large comfortable beds and fans above the beds, to keep the air moving on warm nights. At the front of each room, a large pair of wooden doors open out onto a small private balcony. Here is a comfortable day-bed, as well as two lounging chairs and a coffee table. This is a great place to sit in the evening and enjoy a peaceful drink. The en-suite bathroom also has dark wood floors and white-washed walls, in keeping with the main bedroom, and hand-carved mirrors above twin sinks, which are set into a beautiful wooden surface. The bathrooms at Pole Pole all have good hot and cold showers and proper flush toilets. Drinking water is provided, as is soap and some toiletries.
