Tented room

Pom Pom, Okavango Delta Safari Reserves, Botswana

The rooms at Pom Pom Camp each overlook the lagoon in front of camp, which was bursting with hippos when we visited. Reached by a sandy and well lit path, the rooms are structured double-shelled tents on raised wooden decks, with a large shaded veranda at the front – with a hand rail. On the veranda there is a table and two comfortable chairs in the shade. The front of the tent is fully meshed, with a zip in the centre; the windows are wide and mesh-covered to let in a cooling breeze.

Inside each room at Pom Pom there are two beds with a large high headboard (including a built-in shelf) behind, and wall-mounted electric reading lamps, designed to look like palm trees. The headboard is decorated with traditional Setswanan baskets. The beds are very comfortable, with white cotton bedding, soft blankets and colourful cushions. There is a fan above the bed but this is slightly ineffective!

On the bed we found a selection of towels (folded to look like a waterlily) and a “welcome pack” complete with information about Pom Pom and the surrounding area. On the left of the tent there is a teak desk with bottled water, and a wicker basket containing mosquito repellent, mosquito room spray, an alarm horn and mosquito coils. At the back of the room is a large wardrobe with a safe inside, and two sturdy luggage racks for bags.

My room at Pom Pom had an extra treat – the lagoon frogs serenade you to sleep with their “tinkle-tinkle” sound, and I had a pair of black-collared barbets nesting in a branch right outside the front of the room!

The bathrooms at Pom Pom are en-suite and split into two sections. Inside is a flush toilet, a washstand and a hand-decorated basin (mine had elephants in ever-decreasing circles!). There is also a towel rail and a selection of cream-coloured fluffy towels, and a good selection of complementary toiletries including a glycerin soap, body lotion, shampoo and shower gel. Washing powder is also provided for washing undergarments.

The second section of the bathroom is found through a zipped door, at the back end of the tent. It's a triangular room housing an partially-open shower – which is shaded by the tent's awning, although has a huge mesh panel to one side, allowing good views of the sky and stars at night.

My shower was powerful with plenty of hot water, and the room had a polished tree branch decoratively and usefully placed for draping towels. A large mirror gives a full (and occasionally disconcerting) view of the shower, and there is a linen basket in the corner of the room.
