Cottages

Ras Kutani, Ras Kutani area, Tanzania

The lagoon cottages and beach cottages at Ras Kutani are identical in terms of build and style; they differ only in location.

The Beach Cottages are all situated to one side of Ras Kutani's main lounge and dining room area, and are set in open manicured gardens with views out across the sea.

The Lagoon Cottages are on the other side of the lodge, in slightly more lush and tropical gardens. These rooms are set around the lagoon so don't quite the same clear sea views – however their real advantage is that the lush tropical plants offer delightfully cool shade.

All of these rooms are very spacious with generous balconies which are open on all sides for a cool breeze. This is the perfect place for lounging – lie back on one of the cushioned sofas or in one of the hammocks.

Set back from the veranda, through wide French doors is the bedroom. The bed frame is made from white-washed polished stone and is colourfully decorated with kikoi material. Mosquito netting hangs from the frame above and is tucked around your bed for you, before you return from dinner.

The floors of the room are covered in weaved makuti mats and the walls are made with solid thick bamboo. The use of natural materials helps the room to stay amazingly cool throughout the day – without the need for air-conditioning or a fan. This is especially important as Ras Kutani does not have fans or air-conditioning in any of the Beach or Lagoon rooms.

The bathroom is situated behind a large wall at the back of the bed. There is plenty of space here, with a flush-toilet, hot-and-cold shower and his-and-hers sinks.

The bathroom keeps in style with the rest of the room by having makuti mat floors, white washes surfaces and bamboo walls. Though the sinks – are a wonderful blue pottery and add some colourful character.
