Stone banda

Ruaha River Lodge, Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

The rooms at Ruaha River Lodge were recently rebuilt as solid stone bandas, and they are simply vast. Each usually has a double and a single bed in, a large lounging area and a spacious verandah from where you can look out over the Ruaha River.

The veranda is simply furnished with a couple of directors chairs – and is a very peaceful place to while away a few hours. In the heat of the day, you might find animals coming down to the river to drink – especially in the dry season when water is scarce.

Form the veranda, walk through the large double doors, where you will find the bedroom and lounge area. The rooms are subdivided by a low wooden counter which also acts as an area to store clothes. In front of this counter is a comfortable sofa and lounge chair set around a coffee table.

Behind this counter, are the two comfortable beds and bed-side tables. The rooms do not have any form of temperature control – however the cool stone floors and walls help to prevent them overheating. This is helped further by the gauze over the windows, which means that you can leave the windows open to allow the breeze in.

Like the rooms, the en-suite bathrooms are also very large, with a flush-toilet, sink and shower. The bathrooms are somewhat unimaginative and are really just vast open rooms – even the shower has no sort of dividing wall.

However, the bathrooms at Ruaha River Lodge are perfectly functional and have everything you might require. This includes complementary soap (though no other toiletries), twin ceramic sinks, and water heated by solar panels.
