Selous Safari Camp runs excellent small fly-camping trips, which make an adventurous day or two in the middle of a stay here.
These use small dome tents that are made of mosquito netting, so you can lie in bed and see the stars. A hot bush shower under a tree and long-drop toilet are set up for you, and dinner is cooked on the fire (by the cook!) and eaten at a proper table set with linen, cutlery and glasses. It's all very civilised!
During the day, you'll be lead through the wilderness by an armed guide before returning at dusk to a tiny camp, surrounded by flickering hurricane lanterns and the hum of the bush. Fly-camping is best booked in advance. Over and above the cost of the camp, there's a supplement of about £104 per person per night for fly-camping in 2007.
Birdwatching: Selous Game Reserve is a classic area for bird-watching, from the waterbirds found in the lakes and floodplains that surround the Rufiji River, to the dry-country raptors in the hills to the north
