Solitaire Country Lodge is located 83km from Sesriem near Namib-Naukluft National Park, and is a useful place to overnight on the way to Sossusvlei or a base for exploring the Naukluft Mountains. The original owner's wife named the lodge after the solitaire diamond because it is unique and precious. Solitaire can also mean solitary which describes the lodge's location in the local area.
None of the Expert Africa team has stayed at this lodge, but here is what we know about it…
Solitaire Country Lodge consists of 25 bedrooms, 23 of which are twin or double rooms, as well as two family rooms which each sleep five guests. All the rooms are en suite and open on to a central courtyard with a swimming pool. The bedrooms have a fan and tea and coffee making facilities.
The central area of Solitaire Country Lodge consists of a restaurant with a set menu, a bar and a swimming pool. There is internet access in the main office.
There is a general store and post office at the camp which sells homemade bread and apple pie, drinks, petrol and offers a tyre repair service. This is the only such shop between the dunes and the coast at Walvis Bay. Its reputation as having the best apple pie in the whole of Namibia is not unfounded!
Activities offered from Solitaire Country Lodge include a scenic drive through Spreetshoogte and Remhoogte Pass and trips to watch the sunset from the top of the escarpment. Also on offer are walking trails that follow a loop from the lodge, nature drives, donkey cart rides and stargazing trips which include a guide and a telescope.
