Thatched chaletSossusvlei Wilderness Camp, Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp has 9 private chalets, joined by wooden walkways leading off the stone and cement paths. The chalets are constructed of thatch and brick, with an en-suite bathroom. The interior of the rooms are tastefully decorated in light hues with bold printed cushions and dark wood furniture. Each room with the exception of the double room used as the honeymoon suite has twin beds which are pushed together with beautifully crafted wooden headboards. Next to each bed is a bedside table with a night light. There is a thick, heavy mosquito net draped above the beds, more for decoration than as a necessity, as this is not a malaria area. When we last visited Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp, in 2007, we found the rooms to be pleasantly cool and airy, because of the white washed cement walls, high thatched roof (with ceiling fan) and cool light tiled floors. The beds are made up in snow white linen sheets with cream colored throws and scatter cushions in bold desert burnt oranges, browns, reds, beige tones. Entering the chalet to your left are a few shelves and a wardrobe, with his and hers bathrobes. At the foot of your bed is a beautiful part wood / part woven chest which serves as a luggage rack but you will also find additional bedding in there. This does come in useful, as the nights can be very cold here … although the staff will often surprise guests in the very coldest months, who return to their chilly rooms to find hot-water bottles in the beds! The front wall of these rooms is effectively all glass: with a line of large windows and glass panels, all set in wooden frames. These offer great views of the surrounding desert which you can enjoy from almost anywhere in the room, including the long reclining wooden day bed. The en-suite bathroom has a flush toilet, twin wash basins and a walk-in shower. The bathroom's large glass windows allow in lots of light, and also give stunning views of the mountains and surrounding desert. A door leads from the bedroom onto a private small deck. Inset into this is the room's own sky-blue plunge pool, which is sheltered for privacy, and the wind (which can be strong here) by a screen of bamboo sticks.
