The Marine is a classic old hotel, perched on the cliffs above the ocean. You are almost in the centre of Hermanus, yet you can stand on the veranda and watch whales. In recent years it has been upgraded into a Relais & Châteaux property.
Its historical character has remained, but all 43 of its rooms now have individually-chosen fabrics. The hotel has two restaurants, a small spa area and a pool.
Wildlife safaris: In season, between about July and November, Hermanus offers some superb land-based whale-watching.
