Tsumkwe Lodge is a small, simple lodge on the edge of the tiny settlement of Tsumkwe, about 226km from the tarred road north of Grootfontein. It's a very rural, remote part of Africa, and we have worked here for years with Arno and Estelle, your hosts at the simple Tsumkwe Lodge.
They live here and are committed to the sustainability of the area and the well being of its people – and we believe that this is crucial to the Bushmen benefiting from your visit, as well as your own enjoyment and understanding of your visit.
It is Tsumkwe's activities and excursions here that attract people, not the creature comforts here. Your day-to-day itinerary will depend on what you and your guide decide, and also on the bushmen who you are visiting.
You'll have the chance to spend time with them, joining in with their daily activities: setting traps, gathering wild foods, or tracking and hunting game. This is not contrived or artificial; it is very authentic. You'll always have a guide/translator with you, but how much you enjoy it will depend upon the relationship that you strike up with the villagers. It's not a place to stand back and observe; it's somewhere to get involved.
Most of our travellers love this experience. Some have returned with us for much longer trips – spending weeks with the villagers. We find visiting here one of the most fascinating and humbling experiences in Africa, but you must talk to us before putting Bushmanland in your itinerary. It's not a place that everyone enjoys.
Family holidays: Although Tsumkwe’s accommodation is fairly simple, there’s no better place for interested and enthusiastic children. Usually children don’t have the same reservations and barriers as adults, and so they mix and play games with children from the Bushmen village with amazing ease and obvious enjoyment.

Traditional Cultures: Having travelled all over Southern and east Africa, we’re not aware of anywhere that con offer the insights into a radically different culture and way of things that you can get here. You do need to spend time here – and not rush through – but when you do that it’s an excellent experience.

Deep and wonderful experience
Arno really knows his stuff and is quite remarkable in so many ways. We were given a good intro to life of bushmen and how modern civilisation is affecting them - views of time and space need rethink...
