Just 4km from the historic UNESCO wWorld Heritage Twfelfontein rock engravings is Twyfelfontein Country Lodge, built in an attractive spot at the bottom of a hill. The lodge's design has taken inspiration from the colours and shapes in the local landscape, This way, the lodge blends in with the surroundings.
Working in partenership with the local Uibasen Conservancy, a portion of what each guest pays goes towards local community ventures. This ensures that the local community benefits from tourism to the area and that they have an awareness and appreciation of their surrounding environment,
On arrival, you walk between two large boulders with their own rock engravings, although the entrance will soon be moved because the number of people walking past these engravings is causing them to deteriorate. A number of dassie rats live among these rocks, and you may see one or two as you walk by.
The 56 bedrooms and one VIP suite are all painted in the same russet tones as the surrounding boulders. The rooms are set out in blocks of eight, with four at the front and four at the back. Some of the rooms are interleading and so can be used for families. The interior of all the rooms is the same, with white walls and wooden furniture, and rather loud animal print bedspreads. The thatch and stone building materials keep the rooms fairly cool, but wall and ceiling fans are still located in all rooms, and water and biscuits are provided at the tea and coffee station.
At the back of each room is the compact en-suite bathroom, all with showers. (The only bath is in the VIP suite).
Located further away from the main building, the VIP suite looks more like a house than a suite. It has its own private pool and bar, as well as two bathrooms, a kitchen and a very spacious bedroom. Some of the boulders have been integrated into the room, which also has a television. It's even got an exercise bike!
Opposite reception in the main area there's an activity booking counter, and a curio shop. Up a short slope from here is the dining room, raised up on a wooden deck and covered by thatch. The dining room is completely enclosed in a mesh to prevent the bats from entering.
A couple of steps up from the restaurant is the bar, which also has a few chairs and coffee tables. Below the restaurant is the sizeable swimming pool, surrounded by luscious green grass which is frequented by multicoloured lizards. The pool has a rock at one end from which a cascade of water falls into the pool. A few loungers and towels are provided.
With its own activities desk, Twfelfontein Country lodge offers a variety of activities, including stargazing, hot air ballooning, and of course, the popular trips to see the rock art at Twfelfontein, Burnt Mountain, the petrified forest and the organ pipes, although if you are on a self-drive trip this can easily be done on your own. An ephemeral driver drive is offered along the Huab and Aba rivers in search of desert adapted elephants. Guided hiking trails are also offered in the morning and afternoon, as well as a hike up one of the nearby rocks. The lodge also rents out mountain bikes.
In conclusion… Twfelfontein Country Lodge is large and less personal than other lodges, but good value. Although this is a rather big lodge, that receives quite a few groups, it offers good service for its guests and the welcoming is warm and friendly.
