The excellent Waterberg Wilderness Lodge is surrounded by the cliffs of the Waterberg Plateau. It began as a traditional German guestfarm, but it is greatly enhanced by the warmth and humour of its owner-managers, Joachim and Caroline Rust. They and their team have renovated a crumbling farmstead into a great place to spend two or (better) three nights.
The lodge's rooms are comfy with quality furnishings (almost minimalist). The food is excellent and is usually accompanied by lively conversation. Activities include nature drives around the base of the plateau, where Joachim is building up natural game on his reserve. However, the highlight here is guided walking on a private area of the plateau, led by the lodge's local guide. These usually start by going up slowly, invariably taking in some superb scenery, then exploring the top. They last about three or four hours and are not a scramble, but are well worth the degree of energy and effort required.
Wandering around Waterberg Wilderness Lodge
