Boulders Camp is the latest addition to the collection of well-appointed camps in the scenic NamibRand Nature Reserve. This small, exclusive satellite camp is situated 45km south of Wolwedans Dune Lodge and is reached by a 4WD scenic transfer.
Built along the bottom of a granite boulder mountain this lavish camp is small with only four spacious tents, sleeping up to eight guests. Each tent is built on a raised wooden deck and has a four poster bed draped in a mosquito net as the centre piece. Canvas wall panels can be rolled up for spectacular all-round views of the desert landscapes. Other simple but beautifully crafted furnishings include a dressing table, luggage chest and comfortable seats. The deck extends well out from the tented room and features in-built benches, relaxing loungers and cushioned stools. The whole ensemble creates an atmosphere of relaxation from which to enjoy the impressive scenery. During the summer months the air flow through the open rooms keeps the interior cool and during the winter months, hot water bottles warm your bed.
Although not a traditional en suite, each room has its own private bathroom which forms part of the tent and deck construction. Each spacious bathroom has a shower, flush toilet and double basins and is fitted with Moroccan style lanterns and soft bathrobes. Complimentary soaps and lotions are an added luxury but our favourite design is definitely the roll-up canvas window revealing a stunning view over the desert which can be seen whilst you shower or brush your teeth!
The main area at Wolwedans Boulders Camp mirrors the design of the rooms, with a dining and a lounge tent built on a vast wooden deck, and the kitchen set between them. One side of the deck has an open fire place and is used for outdoor breakfasts. Another section has been designed as the sundowner spot making the most of the views over the NamibRand Reserve as each day wanes – well worth a visit on your first night! The lounge interior is furnished with plush leather couches and a small library whilst the dining room houses the communal meal table under a rustic lantern chandelier.
Activities offered from Wolwedans Boulders Camp explore various aspects of the 450km2 NamibRand Reserve. Two to three hour guided walks are usually done in the morning whilst scenic drives in 4WD vehicles are offered in the afternoon. The camp itself is a wonderful place to relax and management actively encourage time sitting back and enjoying the surrounding vistas.
Visitors to the Boulders Camp should note that it is not possible to visit Sossusvlei from here. It is also not possible to do hot-air ballooning or scenic flights over the desert during a stay here. All these activities are offered in the Sesriem area, a little over an hour north of the NamibRand Reserve. For visitors that want to make the most of Namibia's desert we recommend two nights at one of the lodges in the Sesriem area followed by two special nights at Wolwedans.
Although the NamibRand is not a wildlife destination, the vast reserve is home to gemsbok, springbok, kudu, Hartman's and Burchell's zebra, giraffe, klipspringer, steenbok and hartebeest. Visitors may also be lucky enough to catch sight of leopard, spotted and brown hyena, black-backed jackal, bat-eared and Cape fox, caracal or one of the cheetah introduced here as part of a conservation programme. For the ornithologists, there are over one hundred species of birds to be spotted.
