This sketch map shows Tarangire National Park, in Tanzania, and its immediate surrounds. The roads and tracks are marked in red (most are 4WD tracks!), the rivers and streams are in blue, and the various seasonal swamps are shown in dark green.
The 'border' around the park is a track linking a handful of ranger stations, and to the north-east is the picturesque Lake Burugi. The tracks within the park are, like the visitors, concentrated in the northern section. Many visitors on budget safaris visit Tarangire for a day or even less – staying just inside the north of the park, or just outside – and this can makes the north of the park very congested indeed.
Head south in Tarangire and you’ll find fewer roads, far fewer people, and much more sense of space and wilderness; it’s really worth spending three nights here if you possibly can. During the dry season much of the areas marked as ‘swamps’ will be dry reed-beds
Click through to our satellite map of Tarangire and you’ll get a very different view of the park. Zoom out from this map’s coverage and you’ll see how close it is to Lake Manyara and the Rift Valley Escarpment.
