The Bazaruto Archipelago is a group of four main islands off the coast of Mozambique.
It offers a lush tropical climate, includes huge dunes, forest, savannah, wetlands...
... which are home to around 160 bird species, otters, antelopes and rarely seen flamingos.
This region is known for its sandy beaches and great coral reefs.
Only Benguerra Island and Bazaruto Island are inhabited by about 3,500 Mozambicans.
You can get there most easily by plane from Johannesburg via Vilanculos.
Try some water activities like snorkelling, wake-boarding, sea kayaking and diving…
… or simply take a walk and explore the area.
Enjoy a drink whilst watching the sunset, during a romantic dhow cruise.
Amazing views reward you for the effort of climbing a sand dune.
Go dolphin watching, to see the rich marine diversity the Bazaruto Archipelago has to offer.
Horseback riding from Benguerra Lodge, across the sandy beaches is great.
All lodges will offer small boats to go island hopping or salt-water fly-fishing.
The area is well known for its diving and you find a well-equipped dive centre at each lodge.
For those looking for something different, the nine-hole qolf course at Indigo Bay is fun.
The archipelago became a National Park in 1971…
… including the surrounding coral reefs, making a safe haven for the rare dugong.
There are five stunning lodges on the islands and another great option on the mainland.
You can choose between different standards, from laid back like Bazaruto Lodge here…
... and located at the northern tip of the archipelago.
Or the more luxurious, such as Benguerra Lodge.
Though at all, you can enjoy your meals with spectacular sea views.
The food at all the lodges is very good, especially at Marlin Lodge pictured here.
The scenery is beautiful – and incredibly photogenic...
... with its clear, turquoise waters and tranquil, white beaches...
… and some of the most picturesque sunsets on the Mozambique coast…
… that you can see from a boat, your room or even from the pool.
