Lianshulu Lodge review

Lianshulu Lodge is beautifully located on the Kwando River, the place is well-designed, elephants and hippos roam the gardens at night and the staff are friendly.

We did find the stay at Lianshulu the least of the holidays, but that has more to do with the overall standard of our accommodation during the entire trip than Lianshulu itself.

Wildlife was not abundant, but it was special once we encountered some: we saw big herds of roan for example. It was very cold and windy when we were there and that may have affected the wildlife.

Fantastic location

What an amazing location and a very relaxing and luxurious stopover.

The staff were very attentive, rooms fabulous, and the food was also very good. Sitting around the fire on the deck after dinner listening to the sounds from the river was great.

Took the boat trip which was very enjoyable and informative.

Lianshulu Lodge review

Great location and room. The only activity we were offered was a total 'rip off' and disappointing.

The guide seemed more interested in arranging an activity for another group for the following morning! We did not ask the price as we assumed a river trip would be similar throughout our travels but was at least six times that we had previously paid. We feel that Expert Africa should warn other guests of this matter.

The evening meal was at best warm. Thankfully no activity was on offer the following morning as we would hate to think what the price was!

Expert Africa comments

We are sorry that we didn’t flag up the high cost of Lianshulu’s activities to these travellers before they visited this lodge. Whilst it’s always best to double-check the cost of extras on the ground – we should have drawn their attention to the relatively high costs of activities at Lianshulu. Hence we’ve added a note on the lodge write-up to this effect.

Wilderness Safaris, who own Lianshulu Lodge, commented that since these guests stayed at the lodge, new managers have taken over. They have changed the way that the lodge is run, aiming to give all guests more equal attention, so that individuals aren’t marginalised when groups are around. They also now only served plated hot food, rather than warm buffets.

For 2011, Wilderness has decreased the activity rates at Lianshulu by at least 25%, to try to make these better value for money. They have also apologised that the service, food and activities did not live up to expectations.

Best lodge in Caprivi Strip

An exceptionally well run luxury camp without going as far as becoming a spa resort. We were given the 'honeymoon suite' (was it booked by Expert Africa?), but which had twin beds!! The manageress was really switched on, but found time to be sociable with guests. She was obviously a fan of Chris and hinted she would like a copy of his Guide to Namibia.

Resident croc in river under decking. Elephant and hippo in camp at night. Good activities ~ the only place other than Etosha where we saw lions.

Very nice place to be in Caprivi

Excellent on all the points. Preferabily use the speedboat to look for the game. Very good guides. Lovely Mudumu park.

Previously, we went to Lizauli traditional village; totally disappointing : not to recommand.

Lianshulu Lodge review

This was the least pleasant of our lodges. It was a little impersonal compared to the other lodges we had been to. We also felt that we were being pressured into taking the game drives and river cruises.

By the time we got here we had taken many cruises and game drives so had an idea what sort of price to expect to pay but were shocked to find that Lianhulu charged on average at least FIVE times what everybody else charged.

The lodge was beautiful and the food was good.

Lianshulu Lodge review

Returned after a period of eleven years and did not recognise the place. Vastly improved with a very impressive main lodge area and the individual chalets to a very high standard. The staff and food were excellent .

The evening boat ride and game drive were well guided , but the viewing was dissapointing and the price of both was far higher than at Ndhovu and later in our trip at Mazambala so if you are not on an all inclusive rate be aware.

The Camp staff were prompt and efficient in sorting out the border formalities both going and coming back from our transfer to Botswana. which was great fun by speed boat. Another unprompted car wash which was great as the amount of insect life that had died on the front of the car and windscreen was enormous.

Lianshulu Lodge review

Fine location on river but not a lot to see while we were there from our deck or from the viewing platform .

Drives and river trips with excellent guides made up for this but NB Mudumu NP is nowhere near as big as Etosha so if you are there for three days you tend to cover the same ground more than once. No provision for self-drive game viewing (cf Mahango)
