Mazambala Island Lodge review

Left the car at the car park at the transfer slipway and were on our way without delay. After the boat trip to reach the lodge we were greeted warmly by Stephanie and by Andre the proprietor.

The lodge is in the midst of the river which means treks are of two types, by boat and by boat + 4WD. The guides are well versed and knowledgeable of the local flora and fauna and took us safely through tracks/rivers to see elephants, hippos, crocodiles and a multitude of assorted birds.

This is not 5 star accommodation and there is no intention to make it so. The beauty of the place lies in its surroundings and the quality of the staff.

Friendly and quirky

We were in awe of the wonderful location of the lodge, accessible only through being taken by boat along a narrow waterway for about 3km from the designated parking area.

Andre, the owner, and his staff were very welcoming. Meals were buffet style, sat at individual tables. Sleeping cabins were ok, though a little basic and lacking in natural light.

We had a brilliant game drive in beautiful scenery (much greener than other areas we stayed) and we were treated to the sight of huge herds of elephant drinking at the ox bow lakes.

Fine for an overnight stay, but wouldn't have wanted to spend more than one night.

Not up to scratch

We were really disappointed with this lodge.
We found the managerial staff unfriendly with little inclination to inter-react with guests. Guests sat at seperate tables so not much opportunity to converse at mealtimes, and the staff sat together at their own table.
I was horrified to find birds eating the cereals and butter from the breakfast buffet. Toast served on our first morning was cold and soggy - we wondered if it had been out before.
The room was dark, rather on the tired side with no place to put personal toiletries etc in the bathroom. No tea/coffee facilities or early deliveries, just a bottle of water for teeth.
We were booked on B&B but were not offered or given the option of ordering lunch on our full day there.
But worst of all was the feeling of being watched and overheard all the time by the owner and his friend who sat at right angles to diners.
On a positive note, local staff were fine, the river trip and guide excellent.
But we wished we had only booked one night and felt we'd wasted a couple of days.
Would not recommend this lodge and would certainly not return.

Mazambala Island Lodge review

Great location in the midst of the wetland where you get to see different animals and behaviours from the 'norm'. The rooms were a bit tired though.

Mazambala Island Lodge review

Mazambala is nice, but our itinerary of 3 nights here was just too long. The lodge is on an island so you are transported there by boat - leaving your car behind. There are 3 main activities on offer - a game drive, boat cruise and guided nature walk and it seems almost assumed you will do all of these. We did all 3 activities and enjoyed them - our guide 'Gift' was lovely.

We just felt slightly claustrophobic here (1-2 nights would have been ample) and by our third day were killing time reading novels- the only areas to sit are public and there are no tea/coffee making facilities, so every time you fancy a cuppa it's off to pay at the restaurant. Even the small addition of tea/coffee making facilities would make a huge difference to that feeling of being marooned with no facilities.

Nonetheless staff are very attentive and were very helpful when my daughter left a toy behind and they arranged to a visiting tour guide to take it on to our next destination so full marks for customer service.

Mazambala Island Lodge review

What an entrance! We arrived by boat after a lovely twisting journey down various river channels.

Most imaginative layout and excellent atmosphere at the lodge.

We had prepaid for the Horseshoe Lagoon trip only to be told when we arrived that it had left 30 minutes earlier. We got a boat trip instead but we did see literally hundreds of elephants by the side of the river eating the cane leaves, etc. And we got very close too.

Mazambala Island Lodge

Unfortunately, we stayed over at the Mazambala lodge for the night, and had to continue early next morning. Had a relaxing evening and a good nights rest.
