Hobatere Lodge review
Hobatarere Lodge was almost unique amongst the lodges that we visited as it is run by the owners, Steve and Louise, who chatted to us and other guests before dinner. This was a very nice personal touch which made our visit here particularly enjoyable.
The game drives were excellent, we were lucky to catch our first sight of lions during our morning drive and saw them again during our evening drive. We were also able to watch the lions from a hide overlooking a water hole.
This Lodge was well worth the drive, some distance out of our way, to visit.
Hobatere Lodge review
A very special place, hosts providing a memorable experience despite current major renovations, now completed. Food was exceptional.
The morning game walk and evening drives with Martin and Steve were the highlights, along with the unexpected bonus of a morning in a distant hide.
Steve, the host, made a special drive to see a pride of lions.
Life with the lions
Some of the best walks and game drives of the whole trip. Excellent hides. Steve very interesting to talk to.

We had a warm welcome to the Lodge and were informed of the activities. No sooner had we put our cases into our chalet when we spotted a herd of elephants right outside! Great photo opportunity.
The room itself was a little 'tired' and could do with refurbishment, but the beds were comfortable and an extra mosquito net was provided promptly for our daughter when we asked.
The watering hole close to the chalets attracted a variety of wildlife and we were especially pleased to see a mother giraffe and her calf drinking there as, according to the guide, this was the first time in the 17 years he had been working there that this had happened.
The evening meal was the best we had, with plenty of choice. The al fresco dining area was pretty when lit up in the evening which made for a lovely atmosphere.
The night game drive was less impressive. We saw little and, it was unfortunate that the guides, on spotting an animal, often didn't dwell long enough on it to enable us to see it clearly.
Breakfast again presented us with lots from which to choose in an unhurried manner. Again taken outside, it was a real treat to share our meal with several species of bird which visited.
Its star attraction is the waterhole
The location is stunning and the waterhole is just great. We spent two very happy hours in the hide watching the wildlife. The down side is that compared to other lodges the accommodation, whilst perfectly good, was dated.
From a video point of view whilst the hide was superb the noise from the water pump running continuously underneath it was not good.
We had some of the best food of the holiday here and our guide Martin was both very good but also a really nice person to go for a walk with. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. It is a shame that you cannot enter Etosha from here to save a long drive back but we were told that this may happen next year.
Consistently brilliant!
Varied and reliable game. Well priced game drives. night drive particularly recomended.
The new waterhole gave the opportunity to observe a few surprise visitors ( African wildcat).
All the bungalows are very comfortable, the food is excellent and the staff very friendly.
With the main road from Kamanjab being tarmacced hobitare is increasingly accessible.
