Onguma Bush Camp - devoid of wildlife!

A beautiful camp on the fringes of Etosha, this place has recently been re-furbished and sadly animals are now rarely seen at the waterhole...it is a fantastic lodge/ waterhole design but loses its charm being devoid of animals.
We were dissapointed at this.

Food and service could have been better I'm afraid.
All in all the scene was set in a spectacular location but the key players just didn't turn up .

This would not be a place we'd go back to.

Great. Wish we had stayed longer

Gwynneth recommended Onguma Bush Camp as we could not get into Namutoni, but brilliant recommendation. We had two large rondavels at edge of camp, excellent facilities and large ,well equipped bathroom.

The evening meal was excellent as was the breakfast and the staff were very efficient and willing to please. great lounge area to relax and have a coffee after meal overlooking waterhole. Julia on reception anticipated and answered all our questions. Pity it was just an overnight stop.

A comfortable camp for eastern Etosha

This was another camp with very few guests. A delightful setting in front of a large and frequently visited waterhole, there was lots of comfortable seating from which to watch. Meals were very good and service excellent. The track to the eastern park gate is rough in places but we saw a lot of game on the way including a caracal at close quarters.

Our room was large, simply furnished and with comfortable beds. It being June, we didn't sample the swimming pool, right next to the waterhole.

Onguma Bush Camp review

And this is the budget option at Onguma!!?? It is an amazing place - to be honest, a bit chic for us. But we loved it all the same.

Very attentive service. Wonderfully warm welcome.

The guide-book said the rooms were 'spartan'. If this is spartan, I'll go for that every time!

Superb restaurant location overlooking the waterhole.

Beautiful lodge, excellent service

Onguma was absolutely lovely, and the service was top notch. The woman at reception was welcoming, informative, and warm. Mattheu and Max were incredibly helpful and knowledgable, providing incredible service and showing us wildlife.

The watering hole and overlooking deck were beautiful, and the rooms felt both comfortable and luxurious. We had such a wonderful time having drinks on the deck, observing wildlife as the sun set, and the food was excellent. Onguma is certainly on my list of places to return to, and I hope to see Mattheu and Max again!

Blue crane

Not as easy to find as we expected. Although we knew it was just outside the park gate there is no road sign. The brown sign pointing at the entrance gate is labelled for another lodge. The entrance gate does have Onguma on it but we were misled by the lack of sign and went several kilometres past before turing round and seeing a brown sign when we got back to the park gate. So no probs finding it if you are travelling from outside the park.

Waterhole is new and close to the camp so not well used, either because it is new or too noisy. It was great to eat meals and watch what game there was though.

No opportunity to drive around Onguma in your own vehicle so we used the camp as a base to explore the east of Etosha and went back into the park.

Onguma Bush Camp review

We were there during a midge infestation, so the experience was somewhat impacted by having insects swarm the table as we ate.

The room was just OK, but the grounds were quite lovely, with a great bar where you can sit and have a drink and watch the watering hole and sunset.

Onguma Bush Camp review

We loved Onguma.

The rooms were great, the food was equisite and the service fantastic. Definitely one of the best places we stayed and conveniently located for the east of Etosha where we had fantastic lion sightings at Chudop waterhole.

Onguma Bush Camp review

Wow, what a lovely place. Lovely rooms in a beautiful setting. Welcome great, with a cooling flannel for everyone to freshen up.

Food very good quality, in a beautiful restaurant round an open fire. Two lounges and a lovely verandah made for a lovely place to relax at the end of a day in Etosha. A lovely touch was that while we were at dinner, a bedtime story was put in the children's rooms.

The Fort at Fischer Pan

Fortunately for us - they decided to time the renovation of Onguma Bush Camp to coincide with our visit so we 'had to' be moved to The Fort at Fischer Pan.

WOW ... we felt like we had stepped into Abu Dhabi - we were met at the entrance by staff dressed in Arabian style clothes, offered rose water to wash our hands and then led through the 'gate' to an amazing view out over the plain.

Everything about this lodge was first class - our 'bungalow' was equipped with our own fire place (which, at your request , they will light for you in the evenings), the canvas screens lift so we have an uninterrupted view of the plains from our bed , or should we have decided to move outside, we could relax on the balcony or have an outdoor shower and watch the animals.

All meals are served in the main building where we over look the watering hole and the staff await attentively. Dinner is available from 7pm and whilst we were there each table had one staff member allocated so we were ensured continuous service. The chef comes out and introduces himself and explains the menu - and then you are treated to a 5 star gourmet 4 course meal ... and we were here for 3 nights !!!!

We had chosen to take our own morning game drive but as there were not many people at the lodge - we were asked if we would mind only having a limited breakfast as they did not want to have to bring all the food out just for us ... luckily we were still full from last night ! Having said that - the beautiful marinated figs with yoghurt and muesli was more than adequate at 5.30am

Everything about this location was amazing - the staff were exemplary in the attentiveness and professionalism.

The only :( is there are mice in the rooms !!! We weren't warned to keep any food etc packed away in the fridge so spent the entire night awake as we listened to the mice nibliing & rustling away. The Manager of housekeeping did come and try to catch it - but to no avail. The next night bait was set out but still to no avail - the mice proceeded to nibble through my husbands shaving gel and a box of juice in one of the bags that I didn't even know was there.
