Desert Homestead review

The desert homestead is situated in the most amazing area.

I went on a great walk up the mountain on my first day and the views from up there were amazing. Although the horse riding I had booked and paid for was initially cancelled due to the movement of horses, I eventually did some the following day which I thoroughly enjoyed. Lovely, kind horses and a really nice young lady took us out.

I was unable to go an a guided tour to Sossusvlei and nearby attractions (only me booked with a min of two requirement) and had it not been for an old Gentleman American taking me there with his private driver/guide (who knew the area well), I would have missed the horse riding as I couldn't possibly have driven through it all in the same amount of time to make it back on time. That was lucky! Apart from that, the stay was great with amazing food and kind and helpful staff.

Highly recommended.

Desert Homestead review

Excellent location near to Sossusvlei with stunning views.

Over three nights the evening meal varied from average to very good.

We found the service oppressive. A constant stream of unwelcome conversations, when we preferred to be left alone to do our own thing. Took an age for them to sort out a very simple bill and I was hauled back form the car park on departure, being wrongly told that I had to pay for evening meals when the booking was for half board.

It was very cold and windy overnight and early morning, so be prepared. I thought it was just me but the breakfast waitress was wearing a woolly hat and gloves. By mid morning it was sunny and warm for a day at the dunes.

Desert Homestead review

Wonderful setting with stunning views from the room and the terrace area, with very welcoming and helpful staff. The decor in the rooms is rustic but with all the facilities needed. The food was home cooking in style but tasty and with generous portions and the breakfast pack was a great touch which enabled us to head off to Sossusvlei for sunrise.

We really enjoyed the sundowner horse ride - Abel was a great guide and the horses suitable to our (in)experience.

Desert Homestead review

We thought the service at Desert Homestead was excellent and the staff friendly and well-organised. The atmosphere engendered meant that the guests communicated with each other in a way that just doesn't seem to happen at Canon Lodge.

The food was probably the best among the commercial lodges.

My family very much enjoyed the sundowner ride.

Desert Homestead - comfortable and inviting

We felt very comfortable and at home at Desert Homestead. Friendly staff, beautiful views, well appointed and homey chalets and main lodge.

A very easy place to spend some time.

Desert Homestead review

Superb !
Setting, location, rooms all beyond expectations !

The only comment I would make would be that the "en-suite" toilet facilities were actually "in room" - as these were shared rooms, most of us preferred the privacy of the toilet facilities in the main building, with the ability to close a door when entering the toilet !

Desert Homestead review

Brilliant accommodation in the middle of nowhere - acres of sky and millions of stars. Staff very polite and welcoming. Nice touches, e.g. cold drink served on arrival, hot water bottles brought round to bungalows, wake-up calls in morning.

On morning of visit to dunes light breakfast available on site and packed lunch (very good - substantial but healthy too) provided for later on.

Evening meal very good too.

Desert Homestead review

Lovely welcome here, met in the car park and taken to reception for a welcome drink. Cases were taken down to our rooms while we did the mountain walk in time to see the stunning sunset. Food absolutely beautiful here, excellent quality. Ordered early breakfast pack in order to be able to go to Sesriem, which was good. Also ordered a lunch pack to take with us, $80 each which was perhaps a little over priced.

One thing to note is that there are no electric sockets in the room . Although there were plenty of plug sockets up in the main lodge for people to charge cameras and phones, you couldn't really go up there to dry your hair!

Didn't take part in any of the activities there.

A very green desert

The rooms were basic but with character which suited us. They were also clean and well maintained. The food took the form of a fixed menu, so there was no choice. However, it was very good quality and nicely cooked, so for a short stay was fine.

We decided to book a 4WD trip to Sossusvlei instead of taking our 2WD car as far as we could and then taking the 4WD bus for the last bit. The trip was expensive, but worth it as we saw parts of the dunes and canyon we never would have found on our own. There had been a lot of rain earlier in the year, so some of the first dunes in the park were disappointingly green. However, they got more red the closer you got to Sossusvlei so the photo opportunites got better as the day went on. Our guide was first class, giving us details of the local floara and fauna as well as drawing a great diagram on a sand dune to explain their formation.
