Kulala Wilderness Camp review
This was a memorable stay for us in a lovely quiet location with beautiful open views.
We had heavy rain and a lot of wind in our two nights here. Unfortunately the thatched canvas sided chalets are not totally waterproof nor is the main Reception building. The managers and staff were extremely helpful and attentive and we felt coped well.
Memorable trip to the dunes
Arriving late and travel weary we were welcomed with cold drinks and lovely smiles. The location is fantastic, views wonderful. The staff were very accommodating and helpful; although we had only 1 night there, we were still able to participate in the trip to Sussovlei and the dunes the following day and much appreciated being able to shower afterwards before moving on.
The dune trip was amazing; we had an excellent guide in Jonathon, who had, and was eager to transmit , a vast understanding and knowledge of the area- its flora, fauna and geology. 1 night is not really sufficient to enjoy the special setting of this camp.

These traveller had planned to stay here for two nights, however due to unforeseen circumstances had to amend their trip at the last minute, hence the one night stay.
Kulala is great place to stay
We loved this camp - everybody was so friendly and helpful. Patries (sp?) was a relief manager from Zambia and his professionalism and enthusisam was shared by everybody we met. Our guide, Johann, was also excellent - knowledgeable, enthusiastic about his country and good company.
On reflection the game drive was a little pricey, but we would do it again as it was a good introduction to our surroundings as it was the beginning of our trip. It probably wouldn't have been as good if we'd done it after Damaraland for example.
The staff were very accommodating to our requests - for example one lunch time we didn't really fancy what was on the menu and asked if we could have a sandwhich. They happily made this for us with freshly baked bread.
We would love to return to this camp.
Kulala Wilderness Camp review
Overall we enjoyed Kulala very much. The location and the accomadtion are excellent and the service and warm welcome from the hosts Fani and Elana was excellent. Our day out to the dunes, climbing dune 45 and into seisreim canyon was great and well worth doing with the guide . Overall this trip was good value.
There are two aspects I would suggest some changes to. The food although presented well was often tasteless and overdone, which with game can make it very tough.
Secondly, the evening drive/sundowner covers ground that was in the morning drive and whilst the sundowner was nice to do, I thought charging more than the price of a drink for it, to those who had already paid for the morning drive was profligate. You basically didn't see anything new.
Kulala Wilderness Camp review
Lovely lodge with an excellent welcome. Superb staff, especially the guides. Rooms have an excellent aspect over the desert
Easy to go to Kulala Desert Lodge by mistake - take care the distance between the two is considerable and the signage could be a lot better. The desert lodge and Litlle Kulala are well signposted, but at least from the direction we arrived, the signage for the Wilderness Camp is poor - follow Expert Africa map.
Our balloon flight was cancelled, due to weather. It is worth knowing that Kulala will contact the company in the morning and advise you what is happening.
Kulala Wilderness Camp
Not as conveniently located as Sossus Dune Lodge but very nice. The tents were cooler too as there was more ventilation.

A great expereince seeing the dunes from above.
I did think that the actual flight time was quite short. I thought it was supposed to be between 60 and 90 mins, when it was actually much less than 60 mins. I don't know if this was really such good value for the money, however we're glad we did it.
Not Desert Homestead,Kulala Wilderness Camp!!
Arrived at Desert Homestead to be told that they were double booked!! Horrified after the previous experience at Canon Lodge. However they had already upgraded us to Kulala Wilderness Camp and assured us that we should be happy there and that they would ring later to check that we were and also to make arrangements for the morning drive into the Dunes.
We drove on to the Wilderness Camp and instantly realised we had fallen on our feet! Wonderful setting - in fact we were in the furthest tent from the dining room and pool (500m away) which gave us a wonderful feeling of isolation and privacy. The views were beautiful and the tents were excellent with the bathroom and huge shower at the back. The food was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed the staff entertainment.
This trip was originally booked with Desert Homestead but when we had to stay at Kulala Wilderness Camp it was agreed that we could do the excursion with them. This was advantageous in that we were able to enter the park through the private Kulala gate which is closer to the Dead Vlei and enabled us to beat the rush of people and the heat.
The dunes were beautiful but proved much harder to climb then they looked. My camers was constantly in use and I have some amazing photos. Dead Vlei was such a contrast of colours - it has to be seen to be believed. We ate a hearty brunch under a shady tree before driving out through the public gate and visiting the canyon briefly as by now it was very hot.
This excursion was very well worth doing in the company of a guide particularly with the access from Kulala.
A wonderful camp near Sossusvlei
Everything about Kulala Wilderness Camp was organised and friendly from our pick-up at the airstrip to our tours into Sossusvlei.
Wilderness Safaris [who own this Camp and many others across the country] are extremely professional and well-run. Their guides are all experts: really friendly and knowledgeable - they made our visit interesting and varied. Johannes [our guide] was excellent, he answered all our many questions and had a real enthusiasm and love of his country which was a joy to share. He really added to our trip.
The Camp itself is very well run, clean and comfortable - particularly considering how far from everything they are. It's a bit of a drive to the dunes and Sesriem from there but that just adds to the experience.
Enjoyable stay at Kulala
Jimmy was an excellent guide with a big personality; Petronella was a good manager.
The scenic flight from Kulala to Swakopmund was a lovely surprise and a real highlight of the trip. All the pilots were great and go out of their way to make the flying an experience in itself.
