Sossus Dune Lodge review

Great to be inside the Namib-Naukluft park - you can watch sunrise and sunset from the dunes, and it is beautiful and peaceful. Thoughtfully appointed accomodation - service not outstanding but they certainly try.

Sossus Dune Lodge review

A really good location within the Sesriem park, great for early and late access to the dunes.

Very friendly government run lodge with nice if at times overattentive staff.

Luxury in the desert

Very efficient, and very classy. The accommodation was very comfortable, but a long walk to the reception.

All staff were friendly and helpful, but the place had a very 'corporate' feel, like a high class conference centre. However individual members of staff chatted to us in a very relaxed and friendly way, and went out of their way to be helpful.

The trip to the dunes was really well organised, and the guide was excellent.

Sossus Dune Lodge review

Check-in at Sossus Dune Lodge was a rather chaotic affair and unlike other guests we were not able to obtain a room key (we were told that this had been lost). Lunch was below average however dinner was pleasant. On the positive side we loved the chalets and appreciated the chance to take a self-guided walk to Sossus Canyon. The guided activity to Sossusvlei was great with a stunning drive through the dunes and a very knowledgeable guide. We used Sossus Dune Lodge as a base to take a hot-air balloon trip. This opportunity should not be missed!

Sossus Dune Lodge review

The NWR lodge at Sossusvlei - Sossus Dune - was very well managed, with a friendly and homely approach. The food was among the best of all the places we stayed and we had a knowledgeable and capable guide - Rambo - to the dunes themselves. It was a good showcase for the NWR and a great start to the holiday.

The management there clearly had a strong interest in making the place a success and it showed in the quality of the service thoroughout our stay.

The manager joined us at table on our first night - it was interesting to talk to a Namibian about Namibian issues.

Sossus Dune Lodge review

Sossus Dune Lodge is undoubtedly a most impressive lodge. The accommodation and facilities were absolutely superb in every way. The attention to detail in the chalets was wonderful. The design and furniture of the chalets was first class. The main lodge was equally impressive. The staff couldn't do enough for us.

The guide on the sunrise trip to Sossusvlei was also superb, the timing and choice of locations was faultless and he was also very friendly and informative. The management were very sociable and accommodating,eg helping us make a phone call to our next destination.

The only criticism was that the food was not up to scratch. Both I and another guest, who we made friends with, suffered our only stomach upset here, and Lynda had an undercooked chicken. It didn't spoil the wonderful experience, but if this is part of a pattern, perhaps the lodge needs to know if its catering lets down the otherwise excellent standards.

Sossus Dune Lodge review

Unique experience with a fantastic location overlooking Sessriem Canyon and its own direct access to the road to the dunes. An early start means you can be the first to reach Dead Vlei at dawn, and enjoy sundown from Dune 45.

The rooms are amazing and really well laid out and private. Herbert was incredibly helpful and personable, going out of his way to provide advice and teaching us to make ostrich napkins.

It would be helpful if European style plug adaptors were available as is the norm at most other locations.

Friendly and informal - our type of place

We really enjoyed it here; the staff were very friendly and welcoming and the situation inside the park is a big bonus as it allows you down to the dunes either early or late (we did an afternoon / evening trip to Dead Vlei and had the whole place to ourselves, which was just fabulous, and the light for photography is as good at sunset as at sunrise). Trip cost from the lodge to Sossussvlei is very good value given the cost of the shuttle transfer if you don't do the last 5km by your own 4WD (or on foot!)

We liked the hot water bottles - it was very windy when we were there and the rondavels certainly sounded like they were being blown about, but remained intact.

If there was anything to suggest as an improvement, it would be to provide a little bit more information in the rooms about what was available in the way of trips. Food was generally good but on occasion seemed to be trying slightly too hard.
