Kasane to Cape Town Day 12

The drive in was much easier than we had been led to believe. The C20 is newly tarmaced and is now excellent.

We had a friendly welcome from Paul, accompanied by Spencer and Pula the dogs and Rusty and Ferdie the cats – Spike made an appearance later and demanded lap space; if you don't like pets this isn't the place for you!

Our Dune Chalet was very comfortable though it did get cold at night – nowhere near as cold as previous feedback had led us to think however. Staff were all friendly , helpful and professional. Food was good and drinks at a reasonable price.

Paul took us on a short (free) walk in the morning to watch the meerkats emerging from their burrows and setting off to forage – a magical experience!

Beautiful Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch

Wow; what a place.
Stunning setting, right in the middle of the dunes in the Kalahari, red sand as far as the eye could see. Completely magical.
Rooms in chalets were absolutely beautiful and comfortable. The main farmhouse was also lovely; welcoming fire, squishy sofas. Very friendly owner and staff, felt like we were staying in someones house. Food was very good.

They offered excursions, one to feed the cheetas, quite expensive. We saw the cheetas close up from the gardens of the house and so didnt feel that you necessarily need to pay to go into the enclosure. We had lovely walk on the dunes in the setting sun. Completely unforgettable.

Wish we had spent longer at Bagatelle

The staff at Bagatelle are very friendly and welcoming, especially Paul, who, despite being unaware of our previous requests to see the meerkats as the lady we had dealt with had left the ranch, arranged for us to view them at very short notice. He went out of his way to arrange for us to spend time with them and take photos. We stayed in one of the dune chalets, which have amazing views, you can sit in bed watching the waterhole and also the night sky. Beware in winter it can be extremely cold here - our bottle of water froze solid overnight in the car. We wish we had spent more than one overnight stop there.

Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch review

A friendly reception, comfortable accommodation and good food.

The evening game drive was good but the excursion to see the rescue cheetahs was disappointing - we could have achieved the same thing by standing at the fence to the enclosure. We were unable to access the field with the meercats due to a psychopathic zebra that was liable to attack strangers - we relied on a telephoto lens.

Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch review

Charl (manager) and Dube (guide) were fantastic. Charl bent over backwards to help us with 4X4 advice and even checked our tyre pressures and evened them up for us! The Dune Chalets had a gorgeous view, heating and hot water bottles and the warmest dressing gowns on earth were very welcome. The food was lovely with lots of choice. It was great to see lots of game animals right at the start of the trip, ostriches were particularly fascinating.
This was a superb place to break the trip to Fish River Canyon.

Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch review

We stayed in the 'garden court' rooms which should have been for drivers or guides rather than guests and the accommodation was poor.

Staff were very helpful and made sure we saw the meerkats and cheetahs.

Catering was excellent and the chef made a real effort to cater for our vegetarian requirements.

Stuck in the sand

The 3km from the road to the ranch was our first experience of driving in sand and we got it wrong! A slightly daunting experience on only our second day in the country but everyone (staff and other guests) was helpful, full of useful advice and managed not to make us feel foolish.

We did the evening sundowner game drive with an excellent and informative guide and enjoyed it and the morning visit to the cheetahs. Seeing the meerkats was a bonus.

Our dune stilt room (no 2) was lovely - very spacious, clean and comfortable.

So much game in the Kalahari

The afternoon drive in this official desert was remarkable for the amount of game on view - especially impressive if you haven't already been to Etosha in the north. Even if you have, the Kalahari landscape with its parallel red-coloured dunes is stunning.

The best accommodation is built on stilts overlooking the desert and there are also a few 'tame' animals around the place, including Skank, a female springbok with a short length of hosepipe covering her horns - just as well since she has a tendency to nut people (playfully) in the groin! Excellent gift shop here which is very good value for money.

Best oryx of the trip was served here!
