A good night's sleep!
I personally appreciated sleeping for a couple of nights in Swakopmund's non-wilderness setting.
The manager of the guest house was very friendly. She helped us settle in, provided advice regarding our scheduled plans, and helped us with restaurant recommendations and arranging the reservations.
The room was very clean and comforable. The breakfast was also excellent. We truly enjoyed our stay at this b&b.
The restaurant that was recommended to us was "The Jetty", at the pier on the seaside. Very worth the visit as well.
Expert Africa arranged an excursion kayaking from Pelican Point for these travellers. They commented:
The most relaxing part of our trip!
We were both a bit stressed about doing this activity at first, but motivated each other into doing it as "if we're already all the way here, we better do all these things that we will not be able to do once we leave!".
Best. Decision. Ever.
It is amazing to be so close to the sea lions and see them just splash around and play with you. We were not lucky enough to see dolphins close by (we saw them some 50 meters away), but what we did was still enough to make it the most relaxing experience of the whole trip (and one of the most ever, in my case at least). The light sport, the sea, and being so "in the middle of it" seeing the wild sea lions playfully interact with you was just fantastic.
Take a camera with you (a small, inexpensive one that you won't be so stressed about if it gets a bit wet). You will want to remember that moment.
Personal recommendation, we arranged at the last minute to combine this activity with a 4x4 drive to Sandwich Harbor. Also worth it! It's a great activity, with action (quite a fun bumpy ride in the 4x4 in the dunes and the beach), great views of the dunes meeting the sea, and a VERY nice lunch in the middle of the dunes.
Central Guest House review
You cannot imagine what you will get when you first see the Central Guest House from outside.
First, it's the warm welcome of the owners, then it's the spacious, sunny and very comfortable room with all possible amenities (we got the family room). But the most memorable in this guesthouse for us, will be the breakfast. They serve among others excellent bread and a choice of very good marmalade, like the rhubarb one. The breakfast room is also inviting to a longer stay, as you get rays of sunlight directly through the big windows, which was really welcome in the winter time.
The guesthouse is downtown and it took us about 10 minutes walk to reach the ocean and the restaurants. We also walked back at night and we didn't feel unsafe.
Central Guest House review
Central and very friendly.
The receptionists were very willing and helpful, booking our restaurants and confirming our planned tour for us. Our room was a little small but otherwise an excellent place to stay.
Whilst here, we organised for these travellers a trip to Sandwich Harbor. They commented:
We spent a full day with Ernst from Turnstone Tours on a 4WD trip to Sandwich Harbour.
A very special place and an excellent guide. Do it!
Central Guest House review
Central Guest House in Swakopmund was really clean and comfortable with kind and helpful staff and an excellent breakfast.
It's central location was useful with just a short walk down to the sea.
Helpful and welcoming
Good central location, just 5-10 minutes walk from the town centre and the sea. We had a really lovely large room and enjoyed the good choice of hot and cold breakfast options. We also took advantage of the laundry service which was efficient and reasonably priced.
Ellen was extremely helpful in assisting with reservations for dinner and confirming our Sandwich Harbour trip - very much appreciated.
We arranged a 'Full Day Sandwich Harbour' trip for these travellers. They commented:
Our trip to Sandwich Harbour with Turnstone Tours was a definite highlight of the trip.
Ernest was engaging, informative and entertaining and tried hard to make sure all particular interests in our group were covered. Highly recommended.
The location and services provided made this an excellent base for exploring Swakopmund. The "receptionist" Anya was particularly helpful and went out of her way to ensure we enjoyed our stay.
There was a problem on one night when a cat (whose owner was on holiday) got back in at night time and woke guests on the top floor and was indeed put outside again by a guest (us). This was dealt with by the guest house the next day.
Comfortable, convenient guest house
Central Guest House was very comfortable, located in a neighborhood a close walk to the water. The service at Central Guest House is wonderful. The owner and managers are wonderfully friendly and helpful. The owner really went above and beyond to make sure our activities were correctly scheduled. They gave us great recommendations on where to eat and where to visit, and the breakfast options were unique and delicious.
Sand boarding in Swakopmund:
My husband and I had a blast sand boarding. He did the stand up boarding, while I did lie down. The latter takes no skill, and I had an absolute blast. He had a great time to, but stand up was a bit more challenging. Luckily they give everyone an opportunity to also try the lie down boarding. The staff were really helpful and fun, and I learned a lot about Namibia from them. One drawback was that along with three other groups of two and three people, the Sand Boarding company had booked a group of about 20 college-aged girls on our excursion. The girls were quite loud and the sheer size of the group really slowed things down. I thought this large group noticeably reduced the quality of our experience, and I would have preferred being told that they were coming or given the opportunity to be in a separate group. Still, it was a great experience overall, and we loved the pictures and videos. I would also suggest some wider-angle shots on the pictures and videos, to get a feel for how fast the boarders are going.
Don't miss Central Guest House
Really loved this place for location, comfort, service and room.
Owner continued campaign (started at Kulala) against Budget Car Hire until all was completely sorted. Thanks to Monika. All staff first class, couldn't have done more. You couldn't do better at a 5 star hotel!
Whilst here, we arranged for these travellers to do a Day trip to Sandwich Harbour. They commented:
A whole day gave us time to enjoy everything. Driving along the beach watching seals, cormorants, gulls at the edge of the dunes was quite special. This was followed by a birdwatching walk, an excellent lunch and afternoon drive over the dunes. This was spectacular, Ernest really knew his stuff and showed us the dune flora and fauna with energy and enthusiasm.
Could have stayed in Swakopmund another day as trip took up all our time there (and sorting out Budget car).

Central Guest House review
A lot of the road to Swakopmund from Sesriem is badly ridged, but there is some stunning scenery and we saw a group of meercats 70 km before Walvis Bay. The bakery at Solitaire is excellent.
The first morning of our stay, we had an early activity, kayaking, in Walvis Bay and breakfast was provided half an hour earlier than normal at management's suggestion, which was very welcome indeed. The building is a bit austere from outside, but is very nice indeed inside and spotless. Our rooms were excellent. We were helped to choose restaurants for dinner, reservations were made for us and confirmations made for pre booked activities. Good breakfasts. On the day we left, they suggested we filled rolls from the breakfast buffet for lunch, and gave us sealed bags for them without charge. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Altogether excellent. I cannot think of a single fault and would recommend it highly.
We had dinner at Kucklis, the Tug and the Kupferpfanne. They were all enjoyable but the Tug stood out having great atmosphere and excellent food. Beware of over ordering at Kucklis; the portions are simply enormous, and that from a family of carnivores! The interior of Kupferpfamme is fascinating.
We spent an afternoon wandering round Swakop and having cake at Anton's. Anton's is a bit disappointing - melamine decor, but the cakes were good. There are huge numbers of shops for a relatively small town and some very quirky bits of Germany in aspic. Definitely worth a visit.
Whilst here, we organised a trip 'Kayaking at Pelican Point' for these travellers; they commented:
What fun, paddling among the seals, with youngsters nibbling at the paddles. Just us four plus the guide. What is more, I had not realised how short a time the motor boats spend by the seal colony in Walvis Bay - we had two or three hours, the boats more like two or three minutes. A waterproof bag is provided so my wife took her camera for close ups of seals and the inevitable jackal. The drive out to Pelican Point was also very interesting, as were the seabirds and dolphins we saw. This is an experience definitely not to be missed and was probably the highlight of the holiday. Angela was definitely spot on in recommending it.
We also organised a 'Day trip to Sandwich Harbour', about which they commented:
As the usual road to Sandwich harbour is flooded at the moment, we had a long detour round the salt works in both directions which detracted slightly from the day, although there is nothing that can be done about this. The morning was spent going to the harbour, having a walk, including getting within a few feet of a jackal which was totally relaxed, and then getting out as the tide rose. We had the place to ourselves except at the very end. We then had lunch on top of a dune overlooking the Atlantic with pelicans flying past.
The afternoon was a fascinating mix of driving through the dunes and looking at some of the amazing plants, reptiles and beetles which inhabit the area, finishing with flamingoes on a lagoon. One of us thought the morning was a bit flat and not up to expectations, but perhaps we had seen too many photos of Sandwich Harbour in advance.
Lunch and the afternoon were superb and certainly demonstrated what a landrover can really tackle - David Attenborough and a fairground ride rolled into one. Ernst, our guide, was excellent and extremely knowledgable. Perhaps not quite as good as the kayaking with seals, but certainly not a day to miss. We would rather have liked an extra day out in the desert with Ernst and would suggest this for anyone who really wants to learn about this fascinating area and its plants and animals.
