Hoopoe Fly-in Safari

This relaxed fly-in safari reveals Namibia at its best. Generous timings and a wide choice of activities help travellers to enjoy the best of the country’s most spectacular areas.

Hoopoe Fly-in Safari: Summary

Hoopoe Fly-in Safari in a nutshell

This relaxed fly-in safari makes great use of time. It condenses Namibia’s three main highlights into a fly-around safari that’s packed with variety, but never rushed. The small lodges in this itinerary are all old favourites and in great locations.

Start by exploring the Namib Desert great Sand Sea with an expert guide by 4WD, on foot and even by quad-bike. The highlight is a visit to the iconic, silvery-white Sossusvlei and Deadvlei pans, surrounded by the world’s tallest sand dunes.

Flying over the dunes, highlands and escarpment you’ll appreciate the sheer diversity of Namibia’s landscapes, before landing in Damaraland. Here you’ll track free-roaming, desert elephants and seek ancient bushman rock art amidst the scenic hills and flat-topped sandstone mountains.

Finally you’ll hop to Ongava where there’s great rhino-tracking on the lodges own excellent reserve plus the option to explore the adjacent world-class Etosha National Park.

This fly-in trip showcases Namibia at its best: amazing scenery from the air, plus in-depth experiences of three very different locations, with a range of activities from quad biking, walking, and 4WD safaris to sleeping under the stars.

Galton House

Day 1

Galton House, named after the early explorer Sir Francis Galton, is just ten minutes' drive from central Windhoek. A modern yet homely guesthouse, with a backdrop of rolling hills, it was opened in the residential suburb of Eros in 2011. There's a mix of comfortable indoor and outdoor spaces in which to relax and the convenience of an in-house restaurant that caters for all meals.

Kulala Desert Lodge

Days 2-5

Situated on the 210km² private Kulala Wilderness Reserve, Kulala Desert Lodge offers spectacular views. To the west it looks over the Namib Sand Sea; to the east, to the Namib-Naukluft Mountains. Having opened in 1996, south of Sesriem, to make the most of the vista, its other defining attraction remains a private entrance from the reserve into the Namib-Naukluft National Park.

Doro Nawas

Days 5-8

Doro Nawas Camp is perched on top of a rugged, rocky hill, on the floodplains of Namibia’s dry Aba Huab River. Solid, castle-like and almost foreboding in appearance, it has open and attractive views across the plains to the mountains and sandstone cliffs of Twyfelfontein.

Ongava Lodge

Days 8-11

Perched on the top of a small kopje, Ongava Lodge has stunning views of the plains below. Started in the early 1990s, this was the original "luxury game lodge" near Etosha, sitting on the private Ongava Game Reserve, which borders the southern side of Etosha National Park near the Andersson Gate, south of Okaukuejo.

Variable, depending on the flight

Namibia is famed for its stark beauty and boundless desert vistas and there is no better way to soak these in than from the air.
