The Hilltop House is situated on the north side of Windhoek.
Hilltop House: Our full report
Hilltop House is situated in a cul-de-sac in a quiet residential area on the north side of Windhoek, in a suburb called Klein Windhoek. It was built in the 1950s as an art studio, making it quite old by Windhoek's standards, and has great views over the surrounding mountains.
Hilltop House has seven big, stylish bedrooms and all are decorated in a clean, modern style with African touches an all mod-cons. There's a pine deck extending around the house's upper floor, giving many of the rooms an outside balcony. Outside is a small but secure parking area.
All rooms have en-suite bathrooms, hairdryers, mini-bars, ceiling fans, tea-and-coffee making facilities, satellite TV and telephones.
Hilltop doesn't have any communal lounge or dining area, but its pretty garden has a lovely swimming pool and an adjoining wooden deck dotted with loungers, chairs and tables – which becomes quite a meeting place. It's also a great place to watch the evening colours of the sky as the sun sinks, and keen bird-watchers report that it's a good spot for bird-watching.
We often use Hilltop House as a base for a first or last night on a trip. We love the breakfast, and usually opt for it to be served in the comfort of our room – although there's always the option to eat outside under the shade of a large jacaranda tree on the pool deck. There is a choice of breakfasts – including the 'Healthy Breakfast' and the 'Full English Breakfast' – which we've always found to be reliably good.
We usually eat lunch and dinner elsewhere in town, but Hilltop House does offer a selection of tasty meals during the day and evening if you want to stay here and eat in.
Most visitors will probably drive from here, but in fact Hilltop House is within easy walking distance of the city centre; several of the most popular restaurants are just down the road.
Ideal length of stay: Hilltop House is often used for just an overnight stop, although would be fine for longer.
Accessible by: Self-drive or Fly-and-Transfer
Owner: Hilltop House is run and owned by Allan & Angela
Food & drink
Usual board basis: B&B
Food quality: Hilltop House doesn't have a communal dining room – so any meals are served in the rooms, or outside on the pool deck.
Breakfast can be served from 04:30 onwards, for those getting up very early. We usually choose the 'healthy option' – and look forward to it! It comes with freshly-squeezed fruit juice, muesli, fresh fruit, yogurt, freshly-baked croissants, conserves, and tea or fresh (ground) coffee. We've never yet braved the 'full breakfast' – but would expect great things!
Lunch packs can be arranged for those who have to travel – just tell the managers the night before.
A fairly simple a la carte menu is available for lunch or dinner – although most visitors usually eat out. If you decide to eat in, pre-bookings are not usually essential – though the food will take time to prepare, and the choice is a fairly simple one.
