Google map of Conception Island, Seychelles

Just 2km to the north west of Mahé, Conception is one of Mahé's largest satellite islands.

The island has recently been created as a nature reserve to protect its wide variety of wildlife, most notably its birdlife, which includes the extremely rare warbler-like endemic bird species - the Seychelles white-eye - thought to be one of the rarest birds in the world. Other bird species to look out for include the Seychelles kestrel, Seychelles blue pigeon as well as several species of gecko (including the vivid green gecko) and the hawksbill turtle.

Covered in coconut trees, the island was a coconut plantation until the mid 1970's. Since then it has remained uninhabited and undeveloped – probably as a result of the rocky cliff lined coast, lack of beach and lack of permanent surface fresh water. A mountainous ridge runs virtually the entire 1km of its length and is covered with dense woodland – making it a haven for bird life.

Although you cannot currently visit Conception Island itself, the surrounding waters are a popular diving spot visited by local dive shops.
Conception Island
Seychelles
About 2km from the Mahé headland, the coconut tree covered, mountainous terrain of Conception Island has recently been named as a wildlife preserve to protect the rare bird species that can be found here. Although it isn't currently possible to visit the island itself, the surrounding waters are a popular dive spot which local dive companies visit.
