Google map of Empakaai crater, Tanzania

Around 90-minutes drive from the Ngorongoro crater, Empakaai is enchanting in its own way despite being only 8km in diameter. A glistening lake covers around half of the crater, and it's not uncommon for thousands of flamingos to gather in the shallows, giving the emerald lake a spectacular pink surrounding.
You can drive up the outer slopes of the crater to the rim where the view over the crater and to Ol Doinyo Lengai is thought to be one of the most spectacular in Africa – on very clear days you can even see Kilimanjaro and Lake Natrol.
You can then take a 45-minute walk down the footpath, which was created in 2008. The footpath is excellent, however good walking shoes are required. You return up the same footpath to get back to the vehicle. Bushback, buffalo and blue monkey are commonly sited, and elephant and leopards are still present, although not as likely to be seen.
Empakaai crater
Tanzania
Although significantly smaller than the Ngorongoro crater, Empakaai provides some of the most spectacular views in Africa. Thousands of flamingos are often found around the shallows of the lake, which covers around half of the crater, giving it a beautiful pink tinge. Bushback, buffalo and blue monkey are most likely to be seen on the 45-minute walk down the footpath into the crater.
