A pleasant stay

Basic accommodation as expected. Bed comfortable but room and bathroom a bit run down (bedside carpet, lock on bathroom, one broken toilet). Not so clean and cosy as stated in Bradt guide - very dim lighting and a bit dirty under the beds and we had to ask for toilet paper. Darrell got an unintentional glimpse of the kitchen and that was not very clean at all. A few details like hooks for clothes in bathroom and bedroom would be welcome. Torch and flipflops essential for bathroom trips. Dining room cosy and bright and staff helpful and friendly. Comparing the general standard of the accommodation, the food was the best we had on the trip (except for the farewell lunch in Kigali perhaps!) - plentiful, simple but fine.
Garden small but pleasant with lovely birds and a visit from the vervet monkeys.
Location away from the forest (18kms?) and the beginning of most trails (Bradt info) and we didn't get into the forest, so not so happy with "activities". Being my second trip to Rwanda, I was looking forward to the new elements, especially Nyungwe Forest. Even in Primate Safaris itinerary it referred to "a hike into Nyungwe forest in search of colobus monkeys" with "various other primates and forest birds to be encountered on the way". We did do our colobus monkey activity and it was wonderful seeing them, so beautiful, in action, but we were taken to the group which is always in the forest patches in the tea plantation within walking distance of the Resthouse. They were indeed a bit further away than the tracker or the guide expected, but it seemed an easy option for the guide, the driver and for us. It was quite short so we had the rest of the day free with only the garden and the tea plantation. I thought maybe the next morning we could do something but the driver appeared in the evening and said we'd be leaving for Kibuye after breakfast, so no forest. It's difficult to suggest, when you don't know roads and distances. (I think you were in Rwanda recently, Tracy, so you'll probably know that that more upmarket lodge has been up and running for a while - our driver was staying in the staff quarters and showed us a leaflet).
From Kigali to Nyungwe is an 8 hour drive, but we had a nice stop in Butare with lunch and a visit to the museum, which was very interesting, though we were a bit tired after the flight and maybe anxious about our luggage and couldn't take it all in.

ORTPN Resthouse review

The bedroom was clean, the food was tasty and plentiful ( though not very varied over the 4 nights) and the staff and service was friendly.

It had been described as basic accommodation and it was. It could have done with somewhere comfortable to sit - even a bench in the garden.

The shared bathrooms were clean but in one bathroom more water came out of the shower pipe than the shower head.

There was one night when there was no electricity and the candles whilst romatic in the accommodation, were a safety nightmare. Naked candles with billowing curtians did nothing for our peace of mind staying at the end of the corridor, no other exit and bars on the windows!

ORTPN Resthouse review

The food was good. It was really amusing that every day they asked us what we wanted to eat, then would end up giving us whatever they had in the kitchen that day.

As for sharing the showers, that was an experience, I would advise other travellers to take a pair of flip flops to use in the shower and to be able to walk back to their rooms, I ended up with soggy sandals.

The staff were very warm and friendly.

Very friendly and slightly quirky resthouse

Spotlessly clean and very friendly staff.
Food was wholesome and very plentiful, though sometimes came in a surprising order!
Could have been improved by having some comfortable chairs to sit in.

ORTPN Resthouse review

Tracey warned us that this was basic and she wasn't wrong!!! It was not a comfortable place to stay and the food was of the stodge variety.

Having said that it was of course the only place to stay and if we had missed it out we wouldn't have been able to tour Rwanda; it is on that basis that I would recommend it to others.

A basic resthouse, but a great place to be.

Everything said in the (out of date) Bradt guide you sent us is true. It is basic, hot water (in fact any water) limited but it is friendly and clean and gives you plentiful and tasty food.

Lovely garden for bird watching (lots of marico sunbirds). No complaints!
