Nightjar safari

This off-beat safari offers a way to see northern Tanzania with your own private vehicle and guide, whilst avoiding the busier parts of this famous safari area; near Lake Manyara National Park travellers wanting to learn about local culture will love meeting with the Maasai whilst staying at E Unoto and the intrepid will delight in the remote and dramatically scenic Lake Natron, before ending up in Loliondo on the edge of the Serengeti National Park, a great area for game viewing.

Day 1
Depart London Heathrow on your scheduled overnight flight with British Airways to Dar es Salaam.

Days 2-3 Lake Manyara National Park, Tanzania
E Unoto Retreat On arrival in Dar es Salaam, connect straight onto a light flight to Arusha where you will be met by your private superior guide and 4x4 safari vehicle with a pop-top roof. Drive for around 2 hours out into rural Tanzania, passing occasional Maasai tribesmen herding their cattle – before you reach the area by Lake Manyara National. Here you will spend 2 nights at…
E Unoto Retreat (full board & activities)
This Maasai run lodge is the perfect base from which to visit a local village, where you will be invited into a boma (Maasai homestead) to learn more about the fascinating Maasai culture and their day to day way of life. Though only a stones throw from Lake Manyara National Park, it is also a great lodge from which to visit the park.

Days 4-5 Lake Natron, Tanzania
Ngero Sero Lake Natron Camp In the morning leave E Unoto, where your drive will follow the line of the impressive Rift Valley Escarpment. This road takes you into remote Massai lands, where the terrain is dry and harsh and the temperatures are high. Few visitors choose to drive this way and so those who do, will be lucky enough to share the road and the views with no one else. The landscape starts to become increasingly dramatic, until after three hours the imposing outline of the active Odldoinyo Lengai volcano marks the edge of the soda Lake Natron and….
Ngero Sero Lake Natron Camp (full board & activities)
Near the edge of Lake Natron, one of the worlds most caustic bodies of water, this camp is rustic and unusual, but a great base from which to explore this remote region. Spend you days here walking out to the edge of the soda lake to photograph the many flamingos that inhabit the lake, or walking up to the Ngero Sero falls. In every direction there is dramatic scenery and it is this that makes this region so special.

Days 6-8 Serengeti Migration Area, Tanzania
Nduara Loliondo Camp Rise for an early breakfast, and head off at your own pace with your own private 4WD and superior guide. It is worth taking this drive slowly and stopping frequently to take in the views, which become increasingly spectacular as you climb to the top of the rift valley. Look back at Lake Natron and Oldoinyo Lengai one last time, before dropping down towards Loliondo and the Serengeti and arriving at…
Nduara Loliondo Camp (full board & activities)
Situated just outside of the Serengeti National Park, this area is still very much of the Serengeti's eco-system and so also offers great game viewing. Though in addition to the Serengeti, you are also able to do safari walks and night drives here. Nduara Camp is a lovely semi-permanent camp based around the design of Mongolian yurts, which moves to seasonally to be closer to the wildebeest migration.

Day 9
Drive to a nearby Airstrip and catch a light flight to Arusha. From here, either continue on to one of our beach add-ons in Pemba, Zanzibar, or the peaceful Mafia Island, or transfer across to Kilimanjaro Airport by car. Here you will connect with your flight to Nairobi and then meet your British Airways overnight flight back to London.

Day 10
Arrive back in London early in the morning having thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful safari, with ample time to make the final leg of your journey home.
