Travelling between two excellent wildlife reserves in your own private 4WD safari vehicle allows you to see colourful and interesting rural scenes which many travellers to southern Tanzania miss out on: whilst in the small yet interesting Mikumi National Park you'll explore with your own private guide in said vehicle; upon arriving in Selous Game Reserve, you're private guide leaves you to enjoy the area with one of the very knowledgeable lodge guides who know the area intimately. - you'll end your safari with a light aircraft flight back to Dar es Salaam.

Day 1

Depart London Heathrow on your scheduled overnight flight with British Airways to Dar es Salaam.

Days 2-4 Mikumi N.P. & Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania

Your superior guide and private 4WD vehicle will meet you when you arrive at Dar es Salaam Airport for the drive to Mikumi National Park. This journey takes about four hours passing small villages, farm plots (shambas), and Tanzanians in colourful dress walking or cycling between homesteads or to market. Vuma Hills (full board & activities)

Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania's quieter and more offbeat parks. Mikumi's open grasslands are home to a variety of wildlife including various antelope, elephant, giraffe and good numbers of wild dog. Vuma Hills is also a good base from which to take a day trip and hike in the fascinating Udzungwa Mountains; home to numerous special and endemic plant and animal species.

Days 5-8 Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania

Heading northeast from Mikumi, you turn south to enter the Selous Game Reserve. It's a long but very interesting drive today, partly through rural countryside and partly through the various landscapes of the Selous Game Reserve. Rufiji River Camp (full board & activities)

Set high the banks of the meandering Rufiji River the camp offers great views of hippo pods and basking crocodiles below and plains dotted with palms beyond. Spend four nights here enjoying game drives in open-sided 4WD safari vehicles and boat trips, all led by professional and interesting safari guides.

Day 9

On your last morning you'll transfer to a nearby airstrip for a light aircraft transfer to Dar es Salaam. From here you can either continue onto one of our beach add-on trips, or hop onto the daytime British Airways flight back to London, arriving later that evening.

Notes: The prices shown are based on two people travelling together and sharing double or twin rooms. Because this is based on a private vehicle and guide, the costs for this trip would reduce if more than two people are travelling.
